Canon PIXMA MP270 Printer or HP Deskjet 1050 Inkjet Printer? just for small business at home so not heavy usage just looking for best cheap printer, both are same price only £30. canon one says pages 4.8 ipm colour and HP says 12 (no mention of ipm so are they both based in ipm?)

What major would be best for me?

I’ve been having a lot of difficulties with choosing a major/ an area to study in college. I was initially going to go to California College of the Arts for architecture, but wasn’t able to attend due to financial reasons. I moved to Pittsburgh from Atlanta to live with my mom and have been attending a sub- branch of Penn State since fall of 08. If I stay here I’ll have to stay for another year then transfer to another campus.

I have way to many interests that its becoming impossible to choose a major.. I want something flexible so I can learn what I want, but I also want a degree that will supply me with a job and money to raise a family. And yes I know life isnt all about money.

I was almost certain I would like to pursue a degree in international business and business management, until I took a semester of business courses and wanted to kill myself- so dreadfully boring.

I’ve been looking in “general studies”, but I dont know if thats a legit degree? I really want to study a bunch of things… but I feel that having a specific degree will take me further in life…

I want to learn German while I’m in college, but the only German course that is offered is a web based course and I dont want to flunk out from it being impossible to learn online. I plan to study in Germany my junior year also so taking a few semester of German would be super helpful. I’ve been thinking about transferring schools, but I feel like I was put in this situation for a reason…

I would ultimately like to work for a design/ business firm in Germany, somewhere abroad, or in the US with a firm that has international clients; then later on to work from home…

If anyone has any suggestions please, please, please get back to me.

im not the best writer. does this sound like a narrative paper?

In my 15 years of life I’ve had different memorable experiences with racism from the stories I’ve been told to matters between friends and family and what I’ve seen on television. My parents were born in 1965 and their encounters toward racism are slim. Yes, nicknames were thrown around but not harsh enough to take extreme offense. My mother Theresea has been in a loving relationship with a colored Mississippian man for almost 2 years. He is mainly known for being the uncle of the famous rap sensation Snoop Dogg and his popular restaurant Reo’s Ribs. I assume from the stories he has told me, Mississippi isn’t a walk through heaven. Growing up in a state where racism still existed, it wasn’t his favorite place to call home. Reo has told me his fears of swimming he because he has had close friends pulled under water and vanish from his life.
“If I wasn’t careful I would never be here” he said. A colored person couldn’t enjoy a swim in the river without being worried they were going to be drowned by a person who doesn’t like their appearance. Hangings took place, shootings, and they still happen today. Reo Varnado is a now respected man who has had racism become a piece of his life. But his business is booming and he has become part of equality. He is just human.
Being born a mutt of many ethnicities such as jewish, indian, black irish, and European I haven’t had a racial experience myself. I have family and friends who have had some kind pointed towards them growing up. My cousin Antwain is half black as is one of my friends. I don’t understand why people can just automatically assume they can comment and call a person “negro” or “nigger”. A person is a person no matter was shape, color, or size. Each individual has blood flowing through their veins, a brain beneath their skull and a heart between their ribcage. Our skin is just a color. White, black, brown, yellow, we’re still a person.
A few years back I was watching The Outsiders, a movie based off the book written by SE Hinton, with my class. The movie is based on two social classes fighting because they look and act differently. The Greasers were against the Socs as the Socs were against The Greasers. The Socs are the rich pretty-boys who wore high water jeans and sweaters and The Greasers are the hoodlums with slicked back hair. As the movie went by you can see that they aren’t very different. 3 lives were lost because there was no getting along with the opposite clique. But near the end they all end up being regular people who wish to succeed in life and be happy.
I understand there are many different forms of racism such as religion, size, color, sexual orientation and education level. Racial differences are not something we should base life on. A my age I haven’t experienced much, but in a way it great that I haven’t.

I have a huge problem I really need some advice adults only?

Hello, my husband and I have our own business. (landscape architecture) based out of our home. We have a huge house no kids yet because we plan on having that when I graduate from the ultrasound program next year. I will be an ultrasound tech. Anyways, due to the economy going down and things we are barely making ends meat. We purchased this house to have a family in a year and a half. Well, our business isn’t doing so well anymore and my husband said that because I am a magazine model as well he feels that I should be an adult star like a topless high paid dancer traveling from strip club to strip club on the weekends. So I was hesitant about it and since i am in ultrasound school this would help us keep our home. Our home is 3000 a month andi can make that in 2 weeks as an adult star feature entertainer. They want to hire me at 150 an hour for 3 hours a night and i will get a check at the end of the weekend. I felt uncomfortable with this kind of was thinking yes I can do this then I felt like I didnt want to because I tired it before and my husband said he didnt like it but now he is telling me i really need to do this so we can keep our house. I told him we can move out and sell our house and rent a house and i won’t have to do it and we can get caught up with the irs which we still owe 70 grand for not paying them. If we stay in this house then I will have to strip for the clubs on weekends paid hourly cause i am a magazine model but i still wont’ be able to pay the irs back only the bills if I stay here. If i move out into rental home i can pay back the irs and i wont have to strip at all. but he is mad he wants me to strip he wants to keep the house because he loves it here its our home and he has grown attached to it. What do you think it best he is making me feel like crap for how i feel. I feel that we should sell the house and move into rental and save money get out of debt with the irs and I won’t have to get room mates and strip cause I will be in a rental home or stay in our big house and strip to help with the bills until the economy is doing better and also get room mates. ONE: FIRST DAY
“It’s just until we find another placement, honey,” said my mother, turning to face me. “I promise you won’t be here for too long.”

I hoped she was right. The idea of going to a state school for more than a few weeks was terrifying. I was a private school girl, born and bred, with no idea of how to survive in such an institute as this. My hands clutched the seatbelt tightly.

“Mom, please don’t make me do this. Can’t we just get a home tutor like before, please?” I begged.

“No, Brianna. It’s all been sorted out, now. I will find you both a better school as soon as I can, but I’m really very busy right now with the business.”

“I don’t mind, mom,” said my twin brother, Brody. “Brie’s just being silly.”

“Silly?” I exclaimed. He clearly wasn’t aware of the seriousness of our situation. “Silly? Brody, don’t you know what happens to private school kids in state schools?”

“Um, they make friends, have a good time and live happily ever after?” he shrugged.

“No! They get eaten alive!”

Brody laughed. He definitely didn’t know of the realities of American schools. I’d watched every high school movie in preparation for this, and I’d come to the conclusion that we’d either be social outcasts or we’d be savaged by a mutant science teacher.

“Daddy!” I whined. That worked every time.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart.”

Except for this time.

“But, daddy! I can’t do this. I can’t go to state school. They’ll hate me. The smart kids and the new kids are always the pariahs, and I’m smart and new!”

“Listen, sweetie, you know that I’ve tried. I tried to fund the rebuild of your old school after the arson attack, but the authorities wanted to build a mall in its place. I tried to apply to Walterson, but they only accept applications in the fall. I really did try,” he tried to reason with me.

I groaned. There was absolutely no way I was getting out of going to Caspar Hills High School. If I ever found out who burned down Cloverfield Prep, I would make them pay.

“Now come on, I need you two to hurry. Your mother and I need to pick out the colour scheme for the new restaurant chain.”

I stayed firmly put.

“I’ll buy you that encyclopaedia set thing that you’ve been wanting on my way back,” he said in a singsong voice.

Bribery was something that usually didn’t worked with me, but I knew that the encyclopaedias would make a fantastic addition to my reference library. Plus, I would probably need all the help I could get now I was in this place. I unbuckled by seatbelt, and slowly opened the door. A crowd of people were standing around my father’s black Porsche, staring at it intently.

Someone I recognised pushed their way through the crowd. “Brie?”

My heart leapt as soon as I saw the familiar tousled brown hair. “Jesse!” I ran over to him and threw my arms around his neck. I was so pleased that I knew someone in this hell other than Brody. Jesse Daniels was Brody’s best friend who we had known since we were toddlers.

“Hey, Jesse,” Brody called appearing beside me.

“See, it’s not all bad here, darling,” my mother called from the car, “We’ll be back to pick you up at 3, okay? Love you!”

As soon as the car pulled away, the crowd surrounded me, talking at me. I couldn’t make any of it out, but it sure was giving me a headache.

“YO!” Jesse yelled. The crowd went silent. “Give the girl some space.” He pulled Brody and I away from the excited teens.

“Thanks, Jess.” I said, smoothing out my clothes.

T1 MPLS vs 10MB VPN fiber cable both company based?

I currently have a T1 line over MPLS to another location. I am told that my speed should be 1.54 up and down. after checking the speed at speakeasy with their speed test, it shows that i’m only getting 0.6 down and 0.8 up. After speaking with charter business, they offered a fiber solution with 10MB down and 10MB up with a VPN in place of MPLS for a little more then what we pay now. This would mean the connection will be 10 times fater up and 16 times faster down. I know that most cable companies say that it’s up to a specific speed but even at half the speed it’s still a lot faster then what we are getting now. With this being a business account, we would still be able to get a static IP unlike most home cable ISP. With this being a fiber business line, if it went down, the SLA would have it back up quickly. Fiber is usually reliable and normally only effected by outside sources such as a tree falling. If this is the case the SLA would have technicians onsite and problem fixed with a few hours.

A little bit about this business. We need to go online and lookup information, we need to connect to our data center to transfer information back and forth. There has been periods of downtime which could be as much as 10 hours at a time of which would not effect us much. All of our data is kept at a data center and a few servers locally that only local users access. While we do transfer some secure information, most information transfered if sniffed would not be a big deal.

With this being said, Would it be best to go with the 10MB fiber solution, the T1 solutions which were already bottlenecking at, or another solutions? Why do you think the solution your recommending would be best? I thank you ahead of time for your help in this question.

Fannie & Freddie why not let our mortgages go free?

(I wrote a letter to my Senator back in July this exact question–no answer back!).

I want to know why the government will not let Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac “fail”? I would like to see the government take these over and these two “lending giants” (mostly government owned as it is) be completely government owned? The way I could see the situation is as follows: The government announces that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will continue to do business but they are no longer “stock owned corporations”, instead the government takes on the debt, distributes the $5 trillion as and “add on” to the already $9.6 Trillion deficit and the taxpayers (as they are now) and bail out each other. The difference being that any person who now has a mortgage purchased by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac (nearly 50% of all homeowners) would now be “debt free” with no mortgage. The other 50% of people, are the ones that do not comply with Fannie or Freddie guidelines (such as “liar loans”/stated income loans and such… they do not deserve to be “bailed out” as they took on more this than they should have).

The kicker is that no one really knows if their loan is actually owned by Fannie or Freddie, so it’s kind of like the “hot list”. The next part would be to add on a Federal Tax that would be set up as a “lock box” (as Mr. Gore proposed), the Federal Tax could be calculated to a certain percentage on all homes based off the current assessed values and then each year for, lets say, the next 10 years this tax would go DIRECTLY to paying off the debt taken on by the government for “bailing out” the homeowners. (Make sure some good actuaries’ are hired–that’s the tough part).

Here is the best part, now nearly 50% of all persons who now own a home are now mortgage free! This would be a real “stimulus package”, with a savings of (if the loans were underwritten the way they were supposed to be) 33% of a person’s income (suggested mortgages shouldn’t be more that 33% of a person’s gross income).

So the solution is 1. Take on Fannie and Freddie at a federal level–they set the rules. 2. Give a break to the people who have one of these mortgages (they shouldn’t have to pay it back twice over)–i.e. distribute the burden. 3. Raise a Federal Tax to pay the debt back via a Federal Real Estate Tax, with a set time period for this deficit to be paid back. This would cause an immediate increase in spending, taxes, and economic growth…

First Day

“It’s just until we find another placement, honey,” said my mother, turning to face me. “I promise you won’t be here for too long.”

I hoped she was right. The idea of going to a state school for more than a few weeks was terrifying. I was a private school girl, born and bred, with no idea of how to survive in such an institute as this. My hands clutched the seatbelt tightly.

“Mom, please don’t make me do this. Can’t we just get a home tutor like before, please? Or you could send us abroad. That’s what all the other Cloverfield kids are doing” I begged.

“No, Brianna. It’s all been sorted out, now. I will find you both a better school as soon as I can, but I’m really very busy right now with the business.”

“I don’t mind, mom,” said my twin brother, Brody. “Brie’s just being silly.”

“Silly?” I exclaimed. He clearly wasn’t aware of the seriousness of our situation. “Silly? Brody, don’t you know what happens to private school kids in state schools?”

“Um, they make friends, have a good time and live happily ever after?” he shrugged.

“No! They get eaten alive!”

Brody laughed. He definitely didn’t know of the realities of American schools. I’d watched every high school movie in preparation for this, and I’d come to the conclusion that we’d either be social outcasts or we’d be savaged by a mutant science teacher.

“Daddy!” I whined. That worked every time.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart.”

Except for this time.

“But, daddy! I can’t do this. I can’t go to state school. They’ll hate me. The smart kids and the new kids are always the pariahs, and I’m smart and new!” I cringed as I realised how boastful that sounded.

“Listen, sweetie, you know that I’ve tried. I tried to fund the rebuild of your old school after the arson attack, but the authorities wanted to build a mall in its place. I tried to apply to Walterson, but they only accept applications in the fall. I really did try,” he tried to reason with me.

I groaned. There was absolutely no way I was getting out of going to Caspar Hills High School. If I ever found out who burned down Cloverfield Prep, I would make them pay.

“Now come on, I need you two to hurry. Your mother and I need to pick out the colour scheme for the new restaurant chain.”

I stayed firmly put.

“I’ll buy you that encyclopaedia set thing that you’ve been wanting on my way back,” he said in a singsong voice.

Bribery was something that usually didn’t worked with me because I wasn’t into the same things as normal girls – make-up and clothes – but I knew that the encyclopaedias would make a fantastic addition to my reference library. Plus, I would probably need all the help I could get now I was in this place. After quickly checking my reflection in the mirror and running my hands through my long auburn locks, I unbuckled by seatbelt, and slowly opened the door. A crowd of people were standing around my father’s black Porsche, staring at it intently. I was always amazed by how kids were fascinated by expensive stuff.

Someone I recognised pushed their way through the crowd. “Brie?”

My heart leapt as soon as I saw the familiar tousled brown hair. “Jesse!” I ran over to him and threw my arms around his neck. I was so pleased that I knew someone in this hell other than Brody. Jesse Daniels was Brody’s best friend. We’d known him since we were toddlers.

“Hey, Jesse,” Brody called appearing beside me.

“See, it’s not all bad here, darling,” my mother called from the car, “We’ll be back to pick you up at 3, okay? Love you!”

My father drove off before I had a chance to object. As soon as the car pulled away, the crowd surrounded me, talking at me. I couldn’t make any of it out, but it sure was giving me a headache.

Brianna and Brody’s private school is destroyed in a fire, and they are forced to move to the nearest public school – Caspar Hills High. Luckily, they already know Jesse Daniels, one of CHH’s pupils, and he teaches them the ins and outs of life at CHH. The principal puts Brianna on the student council, where she meets Hayden Evans, the most popular girl in school. She is surprisingly nice, and after Brianna gives her some tips, they become acquaintances (but not “friends”). She introduces Brianna to her long-term boyfriend Dexter Ward (CHH’s most popular boy) and his sister Aaryn Ward. Aaryn is unique and she and Brianna become good friends. Brianna becomes enemies with freshman Skylar Carnaby when Skylar gets her in trouble by cheating off her in a test. As punishment, Brianna has to do volunteer work for the spring showcase. There, she meets Nathaniel Carnaby – the gorgeous lead in the showcase and Skylar’s brother.

My wife and I will be launching an online business very soon to take advantage of the growth in the trend of home–based travel agents. Buying a home in San Diego?

We have been offered the opportunity to go in on a home purchase.
Here is the tricky part, our best friends are willing to put the down on the home & we will be the signers. We will live there, pay the mortgage, make some improvements & then when the time comes, sell the house. So their offer is based on making a profit in the end.
We have rented for 14 years & figure we will be doing the same here though unsure on how to approach the whole ‘share the profit’ outcome.
My husband feels we should not do this cuz mixing business with friend/family is never a good decision but what do you think?
We should in the long run be co owners & share in the profit based on what type of improvements are done and if those profits should be 60/40% or what do you believe is fair/correct?

Which accounting software is best to use for a small business which can track inventory and also automatically create custome invoices based on orders input. Right now we track orders and create invoices in Excel and track our financials with Quicken Home & Small Business. I currently work in IT, and have done for a good few years. I have a part time (At the moment) Company, we design, supply and install Professional Home Cinema Systems. When a bank lends money for a family to purchase a home it attempts to make a profit by charging interest and receives recurring payments from the family. First the government would invest in private companies, small businesses, and startups to commision them all to produce home based power. Now home based power is what I think could be a reality in the near future. This means that each home using a combination of technology would be able to produce its own power for its own needs. And this could be done through everything from wind to solar, although solar would be the best bet for such a move. Then the government would also invest in an upgrade of the power grid. This power grid would be a “smart” grid that would treat each home like a hub that supplies energy across a network. Even though each home would power for its own uses, it would also help power other homes and areas as well with any excess it produces or does not use. This smart grid could also then utilize nuclear power plants as secondary backup and supplementary systems that run in unison with home based power systems. The smart grid would also be interactive, meaning it would compensate for brownouts and black outs through the power grid interface.

Talking points:
– Small and private businesses could hire employees to run neighborhood networks of the power grid if say people create communities that have decided to work together beyond the original design of the grid.

-The government would regulate the nuclear plants with oversight commitees to make sure waste is properly disposed of.

Should I get my credential or open my own home daycare?

I am in my senior year of college and will be getting my degree in liberal studies which is basically elementary education. I had been planning on getting my teaching credential however the more I learn about the public school system the less I want to be a teacher. The main focus seems to be on the wrong thing. It seems to be on test scores and not on students and helping them learn the best way we can. Everything is based on test scores to the point that children who need extra help are being overlooked and thought of as an inconvience which is so wrong. But teachers jobs are at risk if their test scores aren’t up to certain standards because the school’s funding is based on test scores. It’s all so backwards and upsetting.

So I have been thinking that instead of getting my credential like I was planning I could open my own home daycare. I love kids and want to have a good impact in their lives and this seems like a great alternative way to do that without having to deal with all the issues and politics of being a teacher. I have made pros and cons lists and discussed with my husband and my mom but I wanted to get an outside perspective. Another factor is that I am legally blind. I can see well enough to live a normal life except that I can’t drive so working from home would really be an ideal situation for both me and my husband. I also love the idea of having my own business. Anyway I would appreciate any perspectives you are willing to give.

Question regarding cost of HVAC unit installed in old home?

I received 4 quotes form local HVAC installers…all checked out fine with BBB and have been in this business for years…all recommended by others. Equal footing for all.
My house is 1800 sqft, one level, full basement and insulated crawlspace and walk up attic. All quotes were for 3 ton units including ductwork. Some recommended fiberglass duct, others sheetmetal…any opinions on either?
One guy quoted $7500 for Trane variable speed Heatpump ($6800 just A/C)
Another for same Trane, just A/C was $8500
One for Carrier Comfort 13 Heatpump(Base model) for $10400
The last was also Carrier base for $12000.

As you see, it’s all over the board. Of course I’m considering the Trane HP for $7500…does this sound like the best bang for my buck? I live in Eastern PA and only use A/C 3-4 mos ayear at most…minimal use. He also uses fiberglass ductboard as the main trunk…I’ve heard good and bad…does it really matter?

What kind of SmartPhone is right for me?

I’d like some unbiased opinions about which type of SmartPhone would be best for my needs. I run a small, home–based, knowledge-oriented service business. Most of the time, I’m at my desk (and desktop PC), but when I go out, I would like to be able to do the following: (1) read and reply to the e-mail I receive through my usual account, which I normally access through Outlook; I want my clients to know that I’m “there” for them; I don’t want to have to use a Web-based e-mail service while I’m in “mobile” mode; (2) make maybe 1 or 2 calls a day–most of my clients e-mail me rather than call me, so calling is mostly for personal use, which isn’t a big necessity anyway, since I work from home and my wife is usually there with me; (3) I’ve never found texting to be of much use–actually, I don’t even own a DumbPhone at this point and have therefore never gotten into the texting thing–e-mail has always worked for me; (4) I suppose it would be handy to browse the Web from my SmartPhone, though I can’t see myself doing much of that–once again, I’m not in the habit of doing so when away from my office, so maybe that would change once I discovered how useful it is to be able to browse for a restaurant when I’m hungry.
My big internal debate is whether to go for the fun-looking (but toy-oriented) iPhone, an Android-based device or a BlackBerry. Sure, it would be nice to have the added goodies like an integrated media player and agenda and what-not, but as far as I know, pretty much all devices have this now.

Oops, I forgot to mention: I refuse to purchase a SIM-locked phone! I travel abroad regularly and need to be able to pop in a local SIM card when I get there. In case it matters, I’m in Canada where Rogers is the main GSM provider (I would need a GSM-compatible phone when in Europe). I know I can now buy a non-SIM-locked iPhone directly from Apple if I’m willing to pay the full price, which I am. To my understanding, Android-based phones tend not to be SIM-locked anyway, are they?

What am I doing wrong on Yahoo! Answers?

For the past few weeks, I’ve been posting thoughtful, relevant answers to a variety of question people have posted here, primarily in the area of business. Yet several of my answers have been “reported by the Yahoo! Answers community” and removed, apparently for violating the community guidelines. One of the answers that was reported and removed had actually been cited as the best answer to that particular question – rather curious, I’d say.

So I receive all these emails telling me my answers have been removed, but no specifics as to why my answers were in violation. That makes absolutely no sense. Can you imagine being arrested by a policeman for committing an unspecified crime?

I’m the editor and publisher of a website about business – home based business, to be precise. I cite that fact, along with a link to my website, in the resource box provided at the end of each answer. I’ve been involved with home based business in various capacities for almost 25 years, so I have some knowledge and expertise in this area. I think my answers to date reflect that.

I began posting in Yahoo! Answers with the idea that some people might check out my site and benefit further from the information that’s provided there. In return for that possibility, I provide thoughtful, relevant answers to people’s business related questions.

Don’t like talking in front of large groups.
Don’t like being controlled.
I like investigating.
I like putting stuff in order and sorting.
Don’t want something that deals with talking on the phone all day.
Something that may be fun or interesting.

I am looking for a career that is not affected so much by the economy, not highly stressful, faster advancement/raises, and pays decent (at least 45,000 a yr.)

Will be attending college in Aug.
