Thomas asks…

Home in Florida sale question?

My wife and I moved to Florida with our homebased book business about 6 months ago. The garage has been transformed into a book warehouse with shelving storing about 8-10 thousand books. Sales are very good and easily pay the mortgage. The house was 2 years old but still new when we moved in. Due to illness we need to sell both the books and the house. What is the best way to go about this?
It is an internet-only based business with most sales being on Amazon and Ebay, the rest on about 15 other venues. We can provide the exact value of the inventory. It is a turn-key business which can be handled easily while working full-time.
It is not in violation of zoning laws, we made sure before we moved here.

Nagesh answers:

U do NOT need to sell either. Business owners get sick all the time.

HIRE someone to come [who has a degree in biz] and run the
biz from either your home or out of a biz rented space.

Or……….tell me more.

IN some cases, even home based businesses have a re-sale value
and biz brokers will take them on.

Carol asks…

Laser or Inkjet Printer selection?

What is the best type of printer for a homebased business for invitation printing? I’m leaning towards a laser printer, but I’m not sure what kind.

Nagesh answers:

Lasers are more expensive but if it is a small business, you can still use the deskjet. Nowadays, the quality on glossy is very very good.

If you decide for a deskjet, get a wide-format like the HP 9650. At elast you are not limited and can even print brochures ad this printer handles up to 13 x 19 and down to 4 x 6 as well as envelops etc..
Just a thought. I started with that and with the money I made, I purchased a color laserjet.

Also, when you print on a desket, if you are using glossy paper, don’t set the quality to BEST but rather, leave it at normal. Because you are using glossy paper, you won’t need that much ink which is why I suggest normal. The final product will still be very very crisp.

Enjoy

Maria asks…

What’s the best way to get customers for a carpet cleaning business? We also repair vacuums on site.?

We can’t afford an ad in the yellow pages or yellow book.
So of these which is the best choice?
FLYERS
COLD CALLING ( of course with proper authority)
NEWSPAPER AD
NETWORKING WITH BUSINESSES. If so then how?
PLease, my partner and I are very good at what we do. I was a home based vacuum cleaner repair business, but when Wallymart moved in it ruined my steady business. Hey when you can get a Bissel for $39 what in the haeck can i do. Although I will say this. I can take any vacuum and for $30 make it like new again. The secret is to do a 100% tare down and clean everything. You can even spray down the motor as long as you use high pressure air to dry it out. No local shop does this. In fact one shop here in Columbus Ohio, who is also the biggest ( they have 4 locations) said that they can’t do complete tare downs and cleaning because it costs $10,00 for the special machine to do it with. Fact is that they make money hand over fist by charging customers for new filters and selling vacs.

Nagesh answers:

This is your answer right here. Its simple and inexpensive for any local business.

Use coupon code local50 and you get 50% off.

Your Questions About Best Home Based Businesses

Sandy asks…

What is the best type of name to use for a business with multiple industries?

We own over 60 websites selling illustrations and photography, will soon have a pet site where we will sell food and toys, multiple web directories and we also have a local janitorial company. Since these businesses vary but we do need insurance and a business license (we are based in the home) would it be wise to come up with a name such as “bla bla Enterprises” that we can use for ALL of the businesses? Please help, I’m not sure what to do.

Nagesh answers:

I think you are on the right track with regard to bla bla Enterprises as that will cover all of the sub businesses.

To try to figure out the bla bla, I’m going to suggest a different and fun approach that will involve some of your best friends.

Try this link: http://www.ychange.com/ychangeblog/?p=78… And follow the suggestions.

Mark asks…

whats the best green or eco-friendly flooring choice for a finished basement?

we have a small area of our basement that needs new flooring as the carpet was damaged by flood and needed to go. the room will be used as computer/school and it also has a fireplace which will be used regularly. this room will recieve traffic daily for school/home based business on the computer, as well as it’s the route to/from the laundry room and garage to the main house. we are open to using carpet again, but would like to consider all possibilities first. would cork be a good option in this room? i’m concerend with putting laminate, etc over the cement basement floor – won’t it be quite hard? we also need to consider the computer chair moving over it constantly… and the dirt from bringing firewood in and out… and we have 2 small children and 2 big dogs.

Nagesh answers:

Okay, you can’t put down a latex paint then polyurethane, that’s putting latex product then oil product, which won’t stick…

One of the things you can do is either paint or stain the concrete. I am most familiar with Behr products, which are excellent. It’s quite a process, because they suggest you etch the concrete (which is an acid that eats at the concrete just a little to prepare it to take the stain)…then primer, then stain. Even though it’s called a stain, you can get a solid, which looks like paint…the other is a semi-transparent, which will show the little rocks and granules still. (Most Home Depot stores will have an example of this near these products). You can also use their Concrete and Masonry Waterproofing paint, which usually just comes in pale colors…and is great for basements because it keeps water out, but still lets air through. If you would rather have something just basic, you can use a Porch and Floor, in either low lustre or gloss. I’m giving you the link to all their concrete coating products, which are awesome. I used the Porch and Floor on my deck and I love it. The company stands behind their products and has a 1-800 number in case you have any questions about their product or how to apply, etc. I wish you the greatest of luck! 0=)

Helen asks…

Mobile DJ Company – What is the best way to deliver equipment to employees for each gig?

I am the owner of a small mobile dj company. I have just hired and trained a couple of part-time employees to do some of my gigs for me. Since I am homebased business, the equipment is stored in my home. I would really prefer not to have employees coming to my house to pick-up equipment for each gig. In addition, I would prefer to NOT have to deliver the equipment myself. Delivering the equipment myself pretty much defeats the purpose of why I hired the employees in the first place as I might as well stay and do the gig if I am going to go through the trouble of loading up and delivering the equipment. Anyhow, does anyone have ideas on how I might solve this problem? Below are some ideas that I’ve considered. Any other additions to this idea list are appreciated. Thanks!

1.Hire a courier service to deliver the equipment – this is actually a pretty expensive option

2.Rent an office and let the employees pick-up the equipment from the office – again, another pretty expensive option

I need your opinion in buying a laptop.Which Brand is the best selling out there?

I am confuse about which brand of laptop to buy. I will be using the laptop for small business, home use and internet. I narrowed it down to Dell ,HP and Toshiba Satellite. Which of these brand is good based on your opinion or best selling out there. I also need to know which wireless internet is good that I am able to use my laptop away from home or traveling to another state for Business matters. Serious answers only. Thanks

Nagesh answers:

To be honest, those are the 3 of the biggest brands in laptops and there isn’t a whole lot to differentiate between them, some other people may come on here and say each one is better than the others and others will say each one is worse than the others. They are all about the same really.

I will say though, i have an HP Compaq business model laptop which is about 4 years old and it hasn’t given me a spec of trouble and I would definately recommend business models over the normal “home use” models when it comes to quality. The business models come with less “crap” preloaded too so you get a leaner system to start with and typically better support from the manufacturer.

George asks…

Career options in fabric painting, glass painting etc?

For a person who is deeply interested in artistic activities like drawing, painting, sculpture etc.. what are the best career options in order to make the hobbies as a means for earning a living? What are the risks involved and how much would be the investment to make it a business? Can it be made a home based business?

Nagesh answers:

It is definitely possible to make a living from art/crafts as a home based business but the amount you make – and your success – will depend on the following:
1. Your skill level
2. The amount of personal drive/motivation you have
3. How much time you spend researching to see what is currently selling for your specific area of interest and if you are willing and able to create arts/craft items that will appeal to the public.
4. How much you are willing to spend on marketing your work.

The very best advice I can give you is to start small and test drive this type of career before diving all the way in. Experiment with selling the things you currently make and see if it sells. The very best place to try this online (in my opinion) is Etsy.com. You can sell your handmade items here for 20 cents per item with a 3.5% fee taken out of your profit if your item sells. Here are some very useful links about selling on Etsy:

Page with info for getting started on Etsy as a seller: http://www.etsy.com/get_started.php

and here is a great guide with some information on selling successfully on Etsy: http://www.ehow.com/how_5094241_sell-etsy-maximum-success.html

and here is a link with real life stories of people who have been abe to quit their day jobs and actually sell their handmade items for a living instead: http://www.etsy.com/storque/search/tags/quit-your-day-job/

Best of luck!

Home Based Chocolate Buisness VS. Home Based Wedding Cake & Dessert Buisness & Doggie Cakes & Cookies?

Hello Everyone.

I seriously am in need of some “Positive” feedback on this subject. I am going to be taking both chocolate classes and going to be on a list for bakery and pastry nine month program, for a 2 year wait. In the meantime.. I plan to take a short certification course for ten months, in small buisness enterperneurship, to teach me the ins and outs and basics, as well, and 2-3 web design classes, as I am in line to get into this program. I am also.. planning on attending three wilton classes as well as instructor certification, while waiting too. I need to learn while I wait. I would appreciate the input you all can give to me. I am wanting to make money, but.. keeping the business at home and mabe….internet. I want to become the best I can be. Perhaps even incorporate doggie gift basket, birthday cakes, and pastry baskets to be sold the day of. Mabe even breads, with wines if.. I can get lisenced to do so. Do I need to specialize?
I am interested in many areas. I am forced to at least choose the baking or.. chocolate area. It seems chocolates are a harder sell and not as busy as the later. I also have more avenues within the baking that make me more marketable inside one area. Chocolates are limited and seasonally busy. I think.. I may have answered my own question heee. I also ran into a woman on pal talk whose daughter is taking a free.. grpahic design program. she just needs to purchase the correct software, but saves money on the program. which is a deal . Its for 6 months and a certificate is awarded. would that help me > >? or. is a few web classes enough to get a web site up and running?

Best way to promote and price….?

I have a small homebased writing business that I am expanding. I will now be offering packages geared for people using affiliate programs to make money. The package consists of advertising, recruitment advertising, recruitment initial contact email and follow-up emails, as well as a training packet. I have given this packet away before in the past as a “bonus” item but now I want to incorporate it into my usual offering. What price should I ask for it and what is the best way to promote it to affiliates?

Nagesh answers:

There are different options: You may price it by number of seats/visitors/Clicks and/or potential benefits.

Best way to manage my ebay sales for tax purposes? (bookkeeping / accounting)?

I am going to be staring my ebay business back up selling used motorcycle parts, but I need a better method of recording sales, expenses, etc. Before I was using some simple excel forms I had made but it was too unorganized… What is the best way to keep track of all my numbers so that when it comes time to pay taxes I won’t be screwed? This is a small home based business but I want it to be considered a legitimate source of income that can be used when trying to buy a new car or get a new apartment. I eventually want to take an accounting class but is there some simple and obvious way of doing this? Thanks!

Nagesh answers:

I have been selling on eBay for 9 years. I have found the best software to use is Quickbooks. The newest version is quite expensive, but you don’t have to get the newest version. I have been using the same Quickbooks version for the past 7 years. Look on eBay for older versions and you should be able to find some for a reasonable price.

What kind of investment company is right for me?

I’m doing well in stock market, I would like to open an investment company (home base business). There are many options, but I don’t know which one is the best for me.
I live in Pennsylvania; I also look for something that allows me to deduct the most from tax.

Nagesh answers:

Well Ameriprise and LPL are good options, however you can’t just open a investment company with out having the appropriate certification and licenses. Depending on what types of services you will be offering at minimum you will need to because a registered investment advisor to charge a fee for service. If you tend to sell advice you will need to get NASD licenses either 6 or 7 as well as a 65.

It would be helpful if you provided some more information on what exactly you are planning on doing though.

Ruth asks…

I’m putting a booklet together but need some advice.?

I;m planning on putting a booklet together for Home based businesses in this area. Is it best to charge the advertisers or to sell the booklets to people interested in having one. I was planning having them made and putting them out for free and using the money from the advertising costs to help pay for the copies, but I cannot make a profit like this, I do not think. The cost for printing booklets is so high.I thought about not charging the advertisers and selling the book for about $5. That way, I would have fewer copies to make and it would be ongoing. What do you think.

Nagesh answers:

I would sell the advertisement spaces to the business that needs then make them all different sizes so they will have different prices which can suit the business budget find out how much it will cost you to have it ready for delivery , Divide the prices up to get your price for the spaces you sell ,to cover all costs.workout your sales pitch start small then as you make money put that back into your business to get bigger and better with each edition good luck.don’t over capitalize yourself.

Donald asks…

How do I learn how to make my own website?

I want to make a very basic website of a small homebased business I’m planning to run. I just want to learn how to do it and put some basic pictures and a very basic menu (it’ll involve food so pictures are a must).

I don’t really have a difficult time learning computer-related stuff so I should be able to understand it and I’m sure there are plenty of guides, just thought asking it here might make it easier and I’d get the best response.

Thanks!

Nagesh answers:

Learn HTML and if possible CSS.

It’s very easy to learn them both in a few days. Take up this most popular tutorial in the web :

http://www.w3schools.com/html/

Or you might be interested to use some GUI based tools like Front Page Express or Dream Weaver to create your website. You don’t actually need to learn anything to create a website using such softwares.

And once your website is created, you can launch it for free in the internet using some free web hosts like 99k.org or webs.com

Hope that helps!

Getting a Toll Free Number for my business?

Can anyone recommend which company is the best to use in getting an 800 phone number for my home based business. I do not have a home phone, therefore I do not have long distance service to turn to for plans. I only have my cell phone.

It seems as I look on line, there are so many and it is so overwhelming, I don’t know which to choose.

Thanks

Nagesh answers:

Obviously you have access to a computer so I would suggest www.ringcentral.com. You can purchase minutes for use with an 800 #. There are a certain number of minutes you receive free and there are several plans to choose from. You can also use your 800# as a fax that will come in directly to your email, as do the the voice messages (unless you have them redirected (i.e. To your cell). Best of luck!!

Tutors & Teachers…..What method do you find works best teaching a struggling child to read?

I am a Children’s Literacy Tutor with my own homebased business and was just curious to see some of the methods being used by teachers or tutors, looking for some creative and interesting techniques and ideas—Thanks

Nagesh answers:

Motivation is a huge key.
If you can create reading exercises that produce immediate pleasant results and rewards it will move the reading lesson along at a good pace.
Ie: a scaverger hunt in which simple directions must be read and followed in order to locate the prize.
Or: a ‘read down’ similar to the old-fashioned spell down, using words which have been studied in recent lessons. WITH ONE IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE. Those who are “read down” first become coaches to the ones still standing (giving whispered answers in the ear of team mates). Just because a child misses one word should not put him out of the game….keep everyone involved.
Or: a ‘cake walk’ in which everyone stopping on a square (which contains a studied word) must be able to read that word in order to continue in the ‘walk’. ONCE AGAIN…..keep everyone involved by creating teams and/or allowing disqualified students to become coaches.

I’m thinking about joining this homebased business but I am curious to know if anyone has joined? If so, what were the results?

Nagesh answers:

I have not joined yet, I’m really thinking about the online pharmacy business or the Mighty Tag business. I know it will take a lot of work, but I have the drive to do it.

There’s a money back guarantee, so I don’t see what there is to lose, so I say just do it and see the out come. I’ll let you know what I think once I’m a active member of theirs.

I have also searched the goggle on anything negative about the company and I cant find a single thing, I also checked the BBB on they don’t have anything bad on the company either, So I’m taking the risk man.

Let me know how you make out, and I’ll be sure to give you an update on me as well.

Talk to you later.

Garrett

Shut it down as of December 31. Otherwise you get into having to report all your 1 Quarter information and filings.

But I started this, side work and it has turned out very well for me. so hearing about all the benifits of home based business, i wanted to see what i could do. would selling product be a way to solidfy my earnings???

Nagesh answers:

Everyone’s situation is different, so I would recommend you meet with a CPA for tax planning purposes.

Basically, you are probably looking at being a sole proprieter with a “Schedule C” business. You’ll be able to deduct business expenses and could choose to do a home office deduction potentially. But it’s fairly complicated and, in my opinion, best done by a CPA.

Good luck.

Your Questions About Best Home Based Businesses

Daniel asks…

What is the best and little to no cost way to market a new cleaning business?

I just opened a cleaning business based from home with a partner of mine. We have advertised in a local flyer magizine and have passed out flyers in neighborhoods. Only a few calls came from the flyer magizine but nothing has come from the flyers that we passed out. What is the best way to market the business with little to no cost? Also, does anyone know how to book clients as regulars instead of one time cleanings… and what are good prices we should set for them? Please help ASAP!!!

Nagesh answers:

Word of mouth is big in the small cleaning business. If you do a good job at fair prices and are trustworthy your name will be passed to friends and family of clients. To start with I would drop off the fliers or cards at local restaurants. Be sure to tell everyone you know that you’re starting a cleaning business. Also try putting some ads on craigslist.com . For pricing figure your time is worth 20 to 35 dollars an hour per person. Do a few cleanings to see how long it takes. Good luck.

Nagesh answers:

Hi Sassy Suga,

Submitting your site to search engines won’t really help you, you’ll be much better off letting the search engines find your site naturally via a few links. For an explanation of why, check out http://www.adambunn.co.uk/search-engine-submission.php

Getting links pointing to your site is a crucial part of ‘Search Engine Optimisation’ (or SEO for short), which you will need to read up about.

Basic SEO isn’t difficult but there is a lot of knowledge to swallow. Because this question gets asked so much here at Yahoo! Answers, I’ve written a basic guide to SEO which is freely available for download at http://www.adambunn.co.uk/seo-beginners.php

Sometimes you will get away with the basic knowledge in my little book and sometimes you will need a lot more help from a professional; it all depends on what market you are in.

Good luck!

Business Directory/Local Portal Home Business Opportunity…looks good…do you think I can succeed with it?

I have been investigating a popular home based business opportunity, which is operating a local business directory and portal for my city. I would make money by selling featured listings and banner ads, as well as with built-in affiliate programs and the best part is that it doesn’t require any programming knowledge (since I don’t have any!).

Anyhow, the one with the best appearance and features seems to the www.yourcityguide.net. They pre-load the website with all my local businesses and have many other great features. I’m wondering if anyone has any experience with them or operates a city guide themselves. Do you think I have a good chance of success considering the minimal investment?

Nagesh answers:

I’ve heard great things about yourcityguide.net. Just make sure you do your homework on any program before you get involved.

I wish you the best.

Joseph asks…

What is the best money maker you have ever done your self an actualy made money on ?

Im looking for a good home base business that is actually going to make me some good money !! Can you help ?

Nagesh answers:

Don’t listen to people on here. There really isn’t an easy and simple way to make money from home through anything that they suggest to you. Most of them are pyramid scams or require you to hound your friends and family to buy things from you; not really things that most of us want to participate in.

If you want to start a home business, start a business out of your home. You can become a writer and submit articles for newspapers/magazines/websites, start your own consulting business, or run a daycare out of your home.

If you don’t mind a bit of adult work, you can work at home by becoming a phone actress/actor or starting your own adult website that has a membership service.

When deciding on a successful home based business system, decide how much of an initial investment you are willing and able to make to start your business. It is entirely possible to start a home based internet business with little to no initial investment, although the more intricate your business, the more of an investment of time and money you may need to make.

Also consider how much time you want to invest in your home based internet business. Many internet businesses only require a few hours a week of your time to maintain them. However, you may find that you enjoy your business so much that you want to spend more than the few hours a week growing your business. Some of the best home based businesses initially only require you to take the time to market your business to potential customers and clients.

The Keys to a Successful Home Based Business

When you are starting your own internet home based business, you will need to be dedicated to growing your business. One of the easiest ways to accomplish this goal is to set a schedule for regular business maintenance.

Another successful technique to utilize if you do not have much experience with having a internet-based home business is to have someone you can work with as a coach and mentor. There are many internet mentoring services that can provide you with guidance on how to market your company and improve your income. For example, if you have a website, there are numerous methods to improve your Google ranking in order to increase site traffic and increase the opportunities for sales.

With a template for success, you can recreate another home based business that is tangentially related and dovetail that into other business opportunities. With time and dedication, you will find that you have built a highly successful network of home based businesses.
