Your Questions About Best Home Based Businesses

Sharon asks…

My employer is lying in order for me to loose my unemployment!?

So I filed for unemployment and it was appealed, I won the first one from the deputy, but the employer filed another appeal and has made up a lot of bullcrap that never happened! She said that I quite my job, but she fired me for coming in with the wrong shoes! She has now started to say that I was disrespectful of my customers I waited on and that when I came in with the wrong shoes, her assitant manager sent me home to change shoes and that I didn’t return and when she called me, I sounded like I was on drugs, and I was very rude and that I stated that I didn’t need the job. What really happened, was that I did come in with the wrong shoes and I asked the assitant manager multiples times if I could go home and change my shoes, he said no and that I couldn’t work today! She later called me and would not give me the chance to speak, and fired me! I was starting college when this happened and I def needed my job because I needed help paying for college and my bills. She has also stated that I actually THROUGH a chair at an employee there, THAT NEVER happened. I thought that the case was based on weather or not I was fired or I quit my job, I do not understand why she is make false accusations for something that does not even pertain to the point of the case! Every single thing she stated is a lie. I have no witnesses because some of them still work there, and a lot of them even stated they would help me if they could, but they needed their job. I do not know what to do honestly. It is a family owned business and I feel as if she will get others to lie for her in her family. All I know to do, is claim it is all a lie and state what really happened and that she never stated before any of this in her first claim and wonder why she is now, and that none of this pertains to weather I was fired or quit. And also I could understand why she would bring all this up if she fired, but she supposedly didn’t! Any advice would be great! Best answer will get perfect score! Thanks
SORRY, LOSE!

Lizzie asks…

major problems at work lots of opinions please urgent?

Ive been having problems with two guys at work. well call them jack and sam. Now for quite awile jack has been harassing me at work. he has tried blocking me in the freezer multiple times, tried running me over with the cherry picker, hit me with frozen boxes of food big ones, hit me with edges of cardboard, threatened and tried hitting me with metal poles and broom handles, hit me with flyswatters, ect. he has repeatedly told me on a daily bases i will never make as much as him and that the department doesnt need me. on top of that a new guy was (sam) and has been siding with jack by saying nasty things towards me. Ive been constantly complained at by my manager for working to slow, but its hard to put effort into a job because of this. despite the fact i have worked very fast and put alot of the effort into this job 98 percent of the time but jack has and continues to take credit and hide my work. He has been in the dairy department since the store opened 4 years ago and he is considered by them as their “best and most valuable worker” and he gets lots of congrats medals and gets lots of power in that department.

growing sick of this i finally decided to report it to the store director and human resources department there. they told me the first week they would move me to a new department. two weeks went by more hitting and harassment. i went again and asked what was being done. they told me that i need to provide them with dates and times of when this happens. i told them its hard to come up with dates when i was afraid of going against my store to begin with for fear of them sideing with jack over me. but i said just pick a day when we work together and look cuz he has done it almost everytime we work together.

i waited another few days. looked at the schedual one day and found out the next day i was working with jack and sam together this time. i went in before work and talked to the high ups again. they let me work a few hours and go home early before both guys came to work.

now the store director called me in today and talked to me. mind you in the beginning they wouldnt listen to me completely and said they cannot go by word of mouth. well now they did go by word of mouth. they asked other employees (of which i dont know of course) about the problems between me and these other guys. the employees said it was a two way street and that i had pushed and hit jack as well. my store director said that i was to tell him the truth and that if i didnt i would be fired. i said he has hit me and i have never physically touched him. why would i as this is a job i depend on for food and bills. he said so your just and innocent bystander that jack harasses? i said yes i take it smile and keep working. so as a result i am getting written up and moved (pretty much demoted) to a cart pusher. on top of that i have no clue what my schedual is as my store director said that he must go confirm once again that the other employees said that i have pushed and hit jack and if they say yes i will be fired. i asked when i worked next and the store director said we will call you and tell you when you work.. giving them time to see if im fired or not… for no reason.

my gf and my father suggest that since my gf is getting a new job making twice as much as what we make now together i quite my job now when she starts unless they fire me before that, go get my dipoma (please no comments about that), work on the businesses i am currently working on building online, and either get a new job when i get my diploma or go to collage. and in the mean time file for unemployment as well.

opinons please and what would be my rights and the best thing to do? i know i didnt hit this kid, he has hit me many many times and many times leaving bruises i know i should have taken pics of but i never came to mind. and now my job is going against me and this jack and sam both still have their job and nothing affecting them out of this really.

Nagesh answers:

Quit your job and GO BACK TO SCHOOL. You seem to be fairly intelligent. When you graduate from college you will be making 4 times more than jack and sam and the joke will be on them. Just remember be patient and steady your reward will come!

Helen asks…

How would you rather be billed?

You are signing up for a lawn service that has a streamlined business model to allow you to not have to worry about making payments, waiting on service, and has a legitimate reputation in your town.

The company’s website allows you to get your lawn service price without waiting on an estimate. Once you sign up online, your home is set up to be serviced on a regular, dependable basis. There are no contracts or cancellation fees.

Which billing method would you rather have?

Option #1: When signing up for service you are directed to PayPal to set up automatic recurring payments based on your frequency of service and your new service is scheduled. There is nothing left for you to do except enjoy your lawn service. Billing is done automatically.

Option #2: After signing up for service online, the owner of the company calls you to verify the cost of your service and when you would like it to begin. To finalize your new lawn service, a credit or debit card is kept on file for payment. Payment is only billed the day following service to give you time to call if there are any problems with the performed service. There is nothing left for you to do except enjoy your lawn service. Billing is done only by the owner of the company.

Option #3: You would rather have the old fashioned way. You call a few lawn services, wait for your estimate dates, find out who might have the best price, call them back, and wait for your new lawn service. You will pay cash or check. The company may have late fees if you pay late.
I should add, this lawn service company is about customer service and convenience for all of its customers.

Nagesh answers:

If you are signing up for the service you are doing it online? Or ??? You failed to say that part. If I was signing up online I would like option 2 for the first month. The personal contact is very important. Then Option 1 would be okay with me. But a visit or call from the owner every 3 months or so would be ideal. Human interaction is still very important in the service industry. I think that the option 3 people will just find a company that is not so customer service orientated and will find the cheapest person no matter if they are knowledgeable

So my answer is 1 after a 2 and a 2 every 3 months. 😉 Good Luck !

Chris asks…

What do you think of these characters for a teen drama story?

Sorry in advance for length. These are somewhat based on my real life.

They’renot yet named, so here’s them with letters for names. They’re all 16, they’re all somewhat nerdy/geeky, they’re all part of the same group and they all suck at sports, just to sum up what would have to be repeated. I tried to make them quite complex, and different aspects of their personality would emerge as the story goes on. And yes, they’re mostly intelligent but that’s because these people tend to group together.

A – The main character who will narate the story. He is a somewhat shy and socially inept student among classmates, but is quite at home with friends. He is quite critical and analytical and often talks back to teachers when he believes their teaching is poor or wrong. He will argue for a long time, and due to being quite intelligent, is usually right. He has best interests at heart, despite his stubbornness, and values his friends deeply and fears ever losing them. He is quite intelligent and creative but struggles to concentrate in anything he does not enjoy and is generally very lazy. He spends a deal of time in contemplation and is very self-aware. Because of this, he often overthinks everything and gets nervous about making mistakes. Around friends he is upbeat most of the time, but can go on about a subject endlessly. He has never had a romantic relationship, but quietly wishes for one. He hopes to get into computer game development, and his main interests are computing, games, art, and movies/TV.

B – He is also quite intelligent and creative. He is more outgoing and charismatic than his peers, but is still quite introverted. He often has depressive episodes and a love-hate relationship with himself. He is quite close to his friends and is normally quite friendly and light hearted, but can become self-centred at times. He is quite lazy. He is in many ways proud of his flaws and is not turned away easily by flaws in others character, though he may make jokes about them sometimes. He eventually decides he is of homosexual orientation and is quite open about it. He does not know what he wants to do for a career, and his main interests are anime, literature and psychology, driven by his own inner confusion.

C – He is somewhat less intelligent than B and A, and is not quite as skilled creatively, though is quite a talented musician. He feels somewhat left out by his lower level of intelligence, but is generally quite positive and supportive of his friends. He shares A’s disrespect for authority, but is less active about it. He is often treated at the pun of jokes, but takes it lightly. He is quite devoted to his friendship, but is easily distracted and can often come off as shallow when he simply doesn’t understand a complex matter. He enjoys video games, comedies and rock music, and plans for a career in the police force.

D – He is fairly smart, but openly admits that he has no creativity. He is quite introverted and can seem aloof at times. He enjoys sarcasm and is quite good at it, but normally stays quiet during class unless around friends. He is more family oriented than the others and keeps many aspects of his life quite private. He does not give in easily, ignoring insults or guilt tricks. He is proud of being weird, and behaves similarly when addressed by most people. He rarely expresses his stronger emotions as he feels it is nobody elses business. He enjoys gaming and has an online life more active than his real one. He doesn’t really think too much about his plans for the future.

E – She is the most extroverted of the group. She is reasonably intelligent and creative. Often with a bubbly demeanour, she is quite open about everything. She knows she is hyperactive and is proudly of English heritage. While usually kind and generous, she can switch to being serious very quickly, and often insults people, including her friends, without feeling bad about it. She is as argumentative as A, and the 2 often end up in long debates. She has a somewhat active romantic life. Her interests include active socialising, literature and TV. She plans to be a creative writer.

F – She is quite casual and genial in general and is one of the most intelligent and creative out of the group. However, she can get very annoyed at people who do not understand things or are hypocritical, treating them with disrespect and sarcasm. She does not brag to people, and can discuss her choice topics at length, but dislikes arguing. She prefers to avoid conflict if possible. She has a series of crushes, but usually gets over them quickly. Often, she prefers to design her own fantasies rather than concern herself with the real world. She loves art, film and TV, especially scifi and fantasy and wants to be a proffesional phtographer.

Nagesh answers:

Wow it sounds like you’ve put a lot of thought into these characters, good for you. The only thing that really concerns me is the fact that they all seem to live in there own little coven. Not to brag but I hang out with a group of intelligent peers and I am smart as well but we still out branch to the rest of society especially since we are girls we tend to be more social then guy are but that doesn’t make it less important for us to get outside of our “group” sometimes and talk to other people who are very different. We are all very creative (again not to brag but one of my friends is an artist, the other a musician, and I’m an aspiring author) and since we are creative we’re not lazy. In A and B they both are creative so it would be more realistic for them to follow their passion and be proactive about it.
What I would really love to see in this show is a variety of characters some twisted scenes and intermingling social groups thats what tends to make a show a hit. I personally think you should add a jock or a popular kid that was a past boyfriend of E/F and while he dates a lot of slutty girls really only has eyes for her. Then maybe an emo kid was once part of the group and the whole nerd/geek clique is trying to make her see that he/she is awesome and deserves to live. You should also add some family background to each character this tends to effect a characters personality and automatically makes the conflicts available endless which is what is needed for a long running show. One of them could have a big family and wants to be a star but is seen as just a kid who will follow in his/her father’s/mother’s footsteps, one could have dead parents and was adopted and has to deal with adjusting to a new school and new family, etc.
I’m sorry if this comes across as harsh I really don’t mean it like that. I’m just trying to help you as much as possible. I really think that the characters are great these are just suggestions to make them and the show/story even better.

Sandra asks…

What is the Best Way to Market My Home-based Business?

I am in the process of starting a home based business. But I need tips on how to network and market my services. I want sell men’s clothing and watches. Thanks

Nagesh answers:

There are so many ways to market your business. It all depends on your time and budget.

I would start off by building a site like the other people have suggested. I love wordpress. It is a blogging platform which you can make look and function like a regular website if you are not after a blog. By the way I am talking about buying your own domain and hosting, not a wordpress.com blog. Or if you are more after a shop like website I would suggest you invest in some kind of shopping cart software, you can pick a fairly good up up for a few hundred dollars and have a professionally looking website with a shopping cart and all. Try 1shoppingcart.com

If you are selling men’s clothes and watches a great way to sell your products is on ebay, my house mate makes a full time living selling watches on ebay.

A great way to market your site or blog or both is to use social bookmarking tools like onlywire.com and social media site like facebook and twitter.

Without knowing more about your business, experience, and budget it is a little hard to provide exact advice however I hope this helps. However regardless of all this I would recommend you check out this book, it is free and it outlines step by step how to market and sell products online http://budurl.com/free133pagebook

Your Questions About Best Home Based Businesses

Michael asks…

Do you guys agree with me that the future of the NBA is dark?

Based on how things are going, the future of the NBA is very VERY dark.

LeBron and Wade and the Heat will most likely get home court advantage in the regular season. But in the playoffs, the Celtics will dominate them once again, like usual.

Then in the Finals, once again, the Lakers will play best when their best is needed the most, and the Lakers will most likely once again 3-peat.

Then in the next few years, the Lakers and Celtics will get old, and Miami and probably New York will dominate (Melo, Amare, maybe CP3). It’ll get boring watching the same teams win again and again.

Maybe LeBron doesn’t win any rings in his career because he wasted 7 years in the craphole called Cleveland.

These days, players coming into the NBA are more about money and weed than basketball.

At this rate, the NBA will be out of business in 7-8 years.

Am I being pessimistic, or do you agree?

Mortgages finance question?

The sovereign debt crisis in Europe and a slowing US economy have dented consumer and business confidence in the western world. There has been an increase in talks of a possible recession in the U.S and the likely effects of it on the Canadian economy. In the midst of this, your family friend Ms. Hazel Diego and her fiancé have decided to purchase their dream home. Their dream home is listed for $900,000; if they decide to purchase the house this week they can get an additional $30,000 off the list price. They do not want to pay CMHC (Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation) insurance premium and have decided to make a 25% down payment (which is 5% higher than the minimum required to avoid the insurance premium).

Hazel and her fiancé follow macro events globally and have friends that work in the investment industry. Based on their own research and recommendation made by friends they feel we potentially have a banking crisis unfolding in Europe and that the US will either go into a recession or at best be in stall speed (1%-2% GDP growth) for several years. The banking crisis in Europe coupled with a recession/stall speed in the U.S will lead to a global economic slowdown and potentially reduce the demand for commodities and other services. This global slowdown can negatively affect the Canadian economy, which in turn will force the Bank of Canada to keep interest rates at current levels or do further monetary easing.

Following are the two mortgage rates offered by a local bank in Toronto that they can choose to finance their purchase:
1.5-year fixed rate mortgage at 3.95% or
2.5-year variable rate mortgage at prime minus 0.50%.
Hazel knows you are taking ADMS 3530 at York University and she has come to you for advice. Below are the questions she needs help with:

Questions:

a)How much will be the principal outstanding on the mortgage at the end of five years under the two options? (10 marks)

b)If Hazel and her fiancé decide to increase their bi-weekly payments by $50, how much sooner can they expect to be mortgage-free under both the scenarios? (10 marks)
Assume prime rate in Canada is 3.0%, mortgage payments are bi-weekly, amortization period is twenty-five years and interest rates stay at current levels over the next five years.

Nagesh answers:

First, To avoid having to pay CMHC you only need to put down 20% of the purchase price.
Assumptions:
Purchase price is $870,000.
Your lender requires 25% down payment ($217,500)
Mortgage amount $652,500
Variable at the end of 5 years you would owe $552,262
Fixed at the end of 5 yeras you would owe $567,532

b) and extra $50 a payment to a variable rate mortgage would be paid off 1 year and 2 months faster
add an extra $50 a month payment to the fixed rate and it would be paid off 1 year and 3 months faster

Susan asks…

Is insurance a worse scam than Social Security?

Insurance is a con. Worse than Social Security, even – because you pay in and (normally) never get anything back.

Consider: You pay say $800 a year to insure your car. Over a ten year period that comes to $8,000. Gone. Out the window. You’ll never see it again.

Think about this. Most people don’t have major accidents. Insurance companies know this – and bank on it. For every dollar they pay out (grudgingly and after much-ado, usually) they take in probably ten more. Insurance companies are hugely profitable enterprises. I won’t call them businesses, because businesses – properly described – provide a useful product or service. They also don’t force you to to be a “customer,” as insurance companies do, having successfully egged on their bought-and-paid for agents in state government (that is, politicians) to pass laws making insurance “coverage” mandatory.

It is no coincidence that the bankrupting of America has tracked parallel with the rise of FIRE (Finance, Insurance, Real Estate). When you add up car, life, health and home insurance, many people are spending $10,000 a year or more for …. nothing! They’ve been gulled into believing they’re “covered” but they’ll be disabused of that notion if they ever have to file a claim. Yes, the insurer might pay… something… eventually. But if it does, it will also double – or cancel – your premiums for future “coverage.” Ask anyone who has filed a major claim. Even after decades of just paying in. As soon as the math starts working out in favor of the insured – even a little bit – the terms of the relationship are swiftly altered to correct the imbalance.

Now let’s talk about car insurance specifically. It was made mandatory on the argument that it’s just not right to permit people to operate potentially lethal and always dangerous motor vehicles on public motorways without the driver having the means to compensate potential victims for any damages or injuries he might cause.

But that was just window dressing. The real motive was to create a coerced and captive “customer” base that had no choice but to pay up. Government-enforced cartels are secure from market pressure; they don’t have to worry about pleasing people – because the people have no choice. Oh, they can shop Tweedledee, perhaps. But he’s not much of an improvement over Tweedledum.

————————————-

I’ve long felt the same way about insurance (actually, I’m much more opposed to insurance than the author of this article is). Most people who purchase insurance are basically just throwing their money away. Basically, you would be better off if you took all the money you use to purchase insurance and stuffed it under your mattress (although that isn’t a good idea because the Dollar’s value is only heading down and I doubt it will ever increase in value again).

I agree that the rise of “finance” and real estate as major sectors of the economy has been disastrous. The entire “finance” industry is basically backed by the Federal Reserve’s policy of endless inflation. The finance industry is a “good investment” during the artificial booms (fueled by the Fed), but when the inevitable crash hits, you will lose your money. Real estate was just a massive bubble which fraudulently sold consumption goods as “the best investment you can buy” (does this remind you of today’s college advertising?) and got a bunch of suckers deep in debt to the banks.

Nobody my age (early 20s) who isn’t wholly ignorant of reality (and yes, there are many people my age whom that description applies to) looks at Social Security as anything other than a Ponzi scheme that will transfer our wealth from us to our parents (who blew their wealth on real estate, insurance, and on dubious investments with the finance industry). Nobody under 30 will ever see a penny from Social Security (I doubt anybody under 40 will). One of these days, people will look back at the Obamacare debate and see how the Democrats compared that debacle to the even worse debacles of Social Security and Medicare (as if these were good things!) and be horrified that people actually held such views. Yet, the insurance industry is even worse than Social Security when it comes to cheating people out of their money for little or nothing in return. It is truly sad that people are willing to hand over their money (and other things much more valuable than money) for nothing more than (often empty) promises of “security.”

Nagesh answers:

Like most people, you don’t seem to have the slightest idea about the value of insurance. It most certainly is a good business, and if you’ve ever been sued for damages you’d understand that. Contrary to your statement they do NOT take in ten dollars for every dollar paid out in claims. They do make a profit, and they allow many Americans to reduce their risk by sharing risk over a larger pool of people. For example, Liberty Mutual had an underwriting profit of $0.006 for every dollar in premiums they received – a small fraction of a percent in profit:

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-02-16/liberty-mutual-profit-jumps-22-to-576-million-on-private-equity-rebound.html

Even under the most aggressive accounting, Liberty Mutual paid out $20B in claims, benefits, and expenses* on $30B in revenues (not including operating costs and amortization, which came to ~$9B). (A claim is what the insurance company pays you for; a benefit is like a free rental car while yours is being fixed; an expense is like the cost of lawyers and claims people to go out to a home site after an incident.) Most of the money for these expenses ends back in the policyholders’ hands.

See page 36 of their annual report for details (page 38 of the PDF):
http://www.libertymutualgroup.com/omapps/ContentServer?c=cms_document&pagename=LMGroup%2Fcms_document%2FShowDoc&cid=1239994248881

Insurance is far better than Social Security – I seriously doubt that I’ll ever see a penny of that money. And even those who receive their money in return only get a fraction of the value of the money they put into the system – years later and without interest.

Lisa asks…

major problems at work lots of opinions please urgent?

Ken asks…

Husband-to-be cheating…how do i confront him?

It would mean the world if you can help me out here. I recently posted another question, regarding my engagement status. I have been with someone for a very long time, and he’s been nothing but great to me. We both based our relationship on honesty and trust. Once, we were talking about our relationships in the past, and even though I told him I had been with several guys before him, he told me that I was the FIRST woman he’d ever fallen in love with and gotten into a serious relationship with. (NOTE: THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF MY STORY) He denied ever being in a relationship with a woman. This made me admire him even more.

Since we live together, we were planning our wedding schedules and all the dates and numbers.
For a few months he was coming home late. Blaming his work. Sometimes he said he was at a friends house and etc. I kind of got suspicious for whatever reason.

For a few weeks, I asked him to stay more at home and help with the wedding arrangements. He agreed. One night, he was taking a shower, and his computer was on Facebook. He told me he’d take a quick shower, then get dressed to take me out on a dinner date on our anniversary. As he was away, I heard a msg pop in his browser. I ignored it as it was none of my business. But several messages kept coming and made me wonder if someone really wanted to talk to him. It was a woman, I had never met or heard of, and she was begging him to take her back and that she would promise to be better than me (his fiancee). It was a little shocking. I am not a person to invade privacies, but this was outrageous. In a moment of emotional rush, I checked his message history. I couldn’t believe my eyes. He had been with, at least 20 girls in the past, and I’m talking about serious relationships. There were flirtatious messages he had sent to girls he did not know. And there were extremely dirty messages involved.

When my fiance came out of the shower i told him I had a very bad headache and we stayed indoors.

The thing is, I couldn’t care less if he had been with a thousand girls if he told me the truth from the beginning. He told me I was the first woman involved in his life… to find out there were at least a dozen more women in his life and that he lied about them…just broke my heart, considering that my BEST friend from childhood was one of these random girls he’d sent messages to.

I need to talk to him and confront him about lying to me. AGAIN I wouldnt care about the girlfriends if he had come clean from the beginning. I’m not sure how to confront him… would you please help me out? Im outraged and disappointed in him 🙁

Thanks everyone
Thanks so much Sue C and Tia, your answers really calmed me down. Feels as if someone understands where I’m coming from.

However, for those who question my morals, please don’t post rude or irrelevant posts. It really doesn’t solve or help anything in this situation. I am a lady and a gentleman’s daughter and I have my own morals.

Nagesh answers:

I am one firm believer in that things DO happen for reasons. I feel you were meant to find all this out & this is the way you unfortunately or fortunately did. IF he is STILL getting messages from another female, this means he IS STILL doing it behind your back! He not only lied prior, he’s lying now. The way this all happened is one PERFECT way for you to bring it ALLL up…everything! Do not accept the unacceptable! When you talk to him, say what you mean, mean what you say. Look him directly into his eyes when you’re talking to him. Honey, getting this ALL out now is a must. This definitely did happen for a reason, take full advantage of it & get to the bottom of it ALL…Let him know the thing that hurts the most is he was & still is being dishonest with you….I SO wish you the best…:)

Your Questions About Best Home Based Businesses

Michael asks…

Confused about a friend?

So I have a guy friend in medical school who is questionably/obviously gay and seemingly closer to possibly coming out (was claiming straight at the beginning of the year, but when people have asked questions on his opinions about girls now, he has stopped answering). Since the New Year, we have been spending more time together and he’s been doing nice things for me continuously (cleaning up all the dishes in my apartment after a potluck, biking me home when I don’t have my bike light, etc… all of this without me asking).

Well this past Friday we went to a party with friends and I ended up really drunk and while on the couch I passed out on him, essentially hugging him and with my hands on his tummy rubbing it. This was at around 1:30 a.m. The other people in the room said they left at around 2 a.m. (he was still awake), and I ended up waking up at around 3:30. I was still rubbing his stomach and I could feel my head was tucked into the crook of his neck and we were semi-spooning. When I got up, he popped up too, we discussed how it was a crazy night, he walked me home, I gave him an extended hug and told him see you tomorrow (we were planning on dinner and a movie the next day).

The next day while we were on the way to this movie, when others would ask about the night, I would just say it was a crazy night and talk in generalities to save both of our faces, though some of the people who came out with us the last night said in the room we were really cozy and that he didn’t flinch at all. After the movie, I had to drop him off last and we both literally were shooting the breeze.

I’m confused as to whether I should talk to him about it or just continue with business as usual or wait till we both have alcohol in our system again and see if we have any more moments (granted this past Friday was particularly opportunistic based on the group of friends who went out). I really like him and some friends claim that he seems to also have feelings for me, though since he’s never been out, he may be afraid to express them. I’m NOT in the business of outing people, but I don’t think I can let this go either. I feel like the fact he stayed back with me to cuddle in our friend’s room after everyone else left is a good sign that he may be showing me some affection back (though I did fall asleep on him), but I don’t want to put it out there and give him the chance to say it was nothing and he was just being a nice guy.

We are classmates in medical school and see each other all the time so I want this to be done in a way that is good for everyone. Do you think we have enough history for me to have a conversation about this? How best should I proceed?

Thanks 🙂

Sandra asks…

What to do about a mother who always tries to ruin my relationships?

I’m 19 now, &+ for as long as I can remember my mother has always tried to ruin my relationships. She has gotten some of my past boyfriends’ numbers, called them up, &+ said racial things to them, as well as suspended my phone so I wouldn’t be able to talk to them. She’s even turned my family against me before, by telling them about my boyfriends &+ telling all of my business.
It’s really irritating, because everytime I’m w/ somebody she tries to convince me that they’re using me for money, &+ she likes to judge them w/ out even meeting them first. I feel like she still wants to control my life &+ that she gets upset at what she can’t control. I also feel like she might be upset because I’m not home 24/7, instead I’m out doing my own thing &+ minding my own business.
It has gotten to the point where I don’t even want to introduce anybody to her anymore, in fear that she’ll judge them based on their pasts or whatever, because she always seems to find SOMETHING wrong w/ everybody.
I know that she’s my mother &+ wants what’s best for me &+ doesn’t want me to end up w/ a loser, but I also feel as if she doesn’t respect my decisions or even feel like I am capable of making good decisions.
I am hopefully moving out by the end of this year or early next year, so hopefully that will help. Does anybody have any suggestions for things that I could do or say to my mother? Or should I just ignore her until I move?
Thanks.

Nagesh answers:

OK so like, I know somebody else in your exact same situation.

My aunt has always had her grandmother try and ruin her past relationships because I think her mother was afraid of “losing” her daughter.

That’s has always been her situation. She never ended her relationship with her mother because in the end family is important to her. To this day she is still single. She’s in her late 50s, and she will never have a family of her own.

I hope the same doesn’t happen to you!

Thomas asks…

Where should we move to?

Where would you like to live or retire in the US?

The question becomes difficult to answer when family, friends and work are NOT part of the equation. Usually people relocate based on one of those three things.

Most people want to live in an area with a low crime rate, great schools, a warm climate, affordable housing, plentiful jobs and good hospitals.

Even so, not everyone will agree about the best place to live. Some people prefer mountains, some prefer the desert or maybe the ocean.

We are still not sure where to go, even after going through the Forbes “Best Places to Live” list and other similar web sites.

We are self employed and have a child with special needs. We are originally from Illinois but we have lived in Arizona for the past decade. We are looking for a change outside of these two states but we will likely travel back to Arizona in the winters if we will be living in a cold climate.

Criteria

We need to be within a 10 or 20 minute drive to a very good hospital.
Must be within a 45 minute drive to a reputable children’s hospital.
Must have excellent schools and a low crime rate.
There must be fun things for kids nearby, like a big city zoo, parks and recreation.

Fair weather with four seasons (or at least a little snow in the winter).
Elevation must be less than 4,000 feet at all times (cannot travel above this altitude).

We want to live in the country and we need a minimum of 7 acres for horses.
We are looking for privacy, nice views and clean air.
We like trees and green grass, not so much rocks, sand and cactus.

Shouldn’t be too cold in the winter or too hot or humid in the summer.

Cannot be further east than Ohio.
Oregon, Washington state, Colorado, South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee are all out of the question.

Needs to be within a 50 minute drive to a big city with an international airport.

We don’t want to spend more than $475k for a 2400 square foot house in nice shape on at least 7 acres for horses, just a little outside of town.

Tax rates, short term economic growth and real estate trends do not concern us much, however we don’t want to live in an unclean area.

I work at home and do not need to commute anywhere. Satellite internet and a regular telephone keep me in business.

We realize that not all of the criteria can be met, so everything is listed in descending order of importance.

You can either respond here or visit our site at http://www.relocationcontest.com

Daniel asks…

What’s fun in Los Angeles and how can I do it less expensively?

I’m joining my husband on a business trip to Los Angeles this month.

I’ve never been to this city before, so I want to do whatever’s worth gawking at first. Where and when is the best place to spot celebrities? I want a good story for my friends at home.

I’d also like to go to Disneyland and Universal Studios. How can I do this for less than list price? I’m not a member of any organization that might get a special discount, like the military or AAA. I’ve heard of the “Southern California Pass” but that includes a lot of attractions that I’m not interested in. And since my husband might not join me until his conference is over at 5 p.m., do tickets become cheaper at the door after a certain time?

I’m also interested in indoor skydiving, which “I Fly Hollywood” seems to offer. Anyone know of discounts for that?

And after I’ve done the tacky tourist thing, can anyone recommend something off the beaten path? Like a local diner with food that isn’t overpriced, a scenic park, or an interesting gallery? We’ll be based in a hotel near Caltech.
Happy Gramps, I’m aware that L.A. is a car-based town with tons of traffic, but thanks for emphasizing this. I’ll now give priority to geographic planning — say, visiting all the attractions in the center of town one day, visiting attractions in the northeast suburbs another day, etc.

Obviousman, with that in mind, could you tell me where those attractions you mentioned are in relation to the center of town? Remember that I have no idea where areas like Santa Monica and Rodeo Drive are in relation to each other.
Actually, I just got ahold of a guidebook which seem to explain the geography in the detail I need.

Nagesh answers:

There are literally hundreds of things to do here. Here is my list of “must sees”, (that can fit in this limited space). Visit as many as you have time for:

Disneyland: The Happiest Place on Earth. Half a billion visitors can’t be wrong. #1 Destination. Get tix off the Disneyland.com web site. Sorry, no discounts for late admission.
Universal Studios: A theme park that grew out of a studio tour. #2 Destination.
Even if you don’t visit Disneyland or Universal Studios Tour, Downtown Disney District and Universal City Walk are very fun places to visit for shopping and eating. And they’re free to visit. If you’re adventurous, try the indoor skydiving (www.iflyhollywood.com). It’s a blast!

Hollywood: Enjoy the Walk of Fame, Entertainment Museum, Chinese Theatre and more. The Hollywood & Highland complex has lots of shops and restaurants, and the Kodak Theater. The El Capitan Theater, right across the street, is where Disney shows their movies. And the Hollywood Bowl is a GREAT place to listen to concerts outdoors.

Olvera Street/Union Station: Olvera Street is the birthplace of LA, and it emphasizes our Mexican heritage. In addition to the Avila Adobe (oldest building in LA), you can eat at some pretty good Mexican Restaurants, do a little shopping, and taste a churro. If you don’t want to go to Tijuana, this is as close as it gets without going there

Rodeo Drive, 90210: Packed with exclusive shops, full of gawkers. They all came to enjoy the excess. Free, unless you intend to buy something.

Venice Beach: Here you’ll find Muscle Beach, street performers and tacky shops galore. Fun, VERY interesting, but I avoid it after dark, when it gets a little TOO interesting for my taste.

Santa Monica: Beach and Pier: Great beach scene and a classic seaside amusement park, complete with antique carousel that has been in a lot of TV and movies. After visiting the pier, you can ride a bike south a couple miles to Venice Beach.

Sunset Boulevard began as a route between the stars’ posh neighborhoods and the Hollywood studios. It runs from downtown to the ocean, passing through the “Sunset Strip” on its way.

Farmers Market and The Grove – A new shopping complex right next to a Los Angeles landmark, It is right next to CBS, so walk across the lot to see if they are taping “The Price is Right”.

Griffith Park – Home of the Los Angeles Zoo, Griffith Park Observatory, Travel Town, the Greek Theatre, and Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage.

Getty Museum – The Getty’s architecture is so beautiful that it keeps me fascinated. No matter whether you like their art, architecture, or view better, the Getty is sure to please. Free.

Attend a TV taping – You can get free tickets at audiencesunlimited.com, tvtix.com, or see the booth at Universal City walk. It’s very interesting to see a show being taped. The most popular, by far, is the Tonight show.

Places to eat:
In-N-Out Burger: Multiple locations, best burger in LA, ask anyone.
Pink’s Hot Dogs: 709 N. La Brea, just north of Melrose. You might even see a celebrity. Maybe.
Tommy’s Chili Burgers: Look for the shack, an LA tradition. The original location is at Beverly & Rampart, a couple miles west of downtown.
Canter’s Deli: 419 N. Fairfax, between Beverly & Melrose. Near CBS, you might spot a celebrity.
Phillippe’s: 1001 N. Alameda. Great roast beef sandwiches. Near Union Station and Olvera Street.
Tito’s Taco’s: Voted best tacos in LA, even though it’s in Culver City. King Taco is a good alternate if you can deal with East LA.
The Pantry: Corner of Figueroa and 9th, downtown. Huge portions, they never close GREAT steak and eggs.
Medieval Times and/or Pirate’s Dinner Adventure: Dinner and an adventure show, both are on Beach Blvd in Buena Park, you get to eat with your hands.

Places to Shop:
Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica
The Grove, Los Angeles
Americana @ Brand, Glendale
Beverly Center, Los Angeles
Citadel Outlets, Commerce
Brea Mall, Brea
The Block at Orange, Orange
South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa
Fashion Island, Newport Beach
Santee Alley, Los Angeles

There are lots of places in Old Town Pasadena to eat. Dozens, in fact. We like Ruby’s, or Buca di Beppo. Ask for the table in the kitchen. Yes, it’s inside the kitchen.

Robert asks…

Can someone help me revise my essay. I had to do a review on a restaurant.?

Today, I reviewed Cheddars in Columbus, Ga. I based my review on the following categories: service, seating, cleanliness, and food. First, I want to begin with the service there. Their service is by far the best in which I have ever seen. I was welcomed with a smile that made me feel right at home. My wait time was roughly 10 – 15 minutes. The second thing I reviewed was the seating. They have the restaurant broken up in to several sections such as, smoking, non-smoking, large groups, and bar areas. I liked the way they did their set-up; therefore, resulting in higher customer satisfaction. The third thing I reviewed was the cleanliness. I paid very close attention to this. Every time I enter Cheddars, it looks like it is their first day in business. I am very impressed with the way they manage to keep the place spotless. The last thing on my list is the food. They have some of the best food in town. I order a steak and some ribs. The meal was very satisfying and enjoyable; therefore, I was craving for more. Overall, I would give this restaurant a 4 out of 5 rating and would always be delighted to eat here day or night.

Your Questions About Best Home Based Businesses

Michael asks…

My son’s girlfriend is trying to drive a wedge between us. What do I do?

My son and his girlfriend are both 18, and have been dating for just over a year. Three months into their relationship she got pregnant, something I believe she did intentionally, knowing he would do his best to stay with her if she had his child. I recognize his part, I just think the pregnancy was only accidental to him.
During the course of her pregnancy she was whiny and demanding, and frequently told him he wasn’t a good boyfriend because (for her reason of the moment). He essentially abandoned all of his friends for hers, since she only wanted to be with hers. He began spending all of his time with her and her family, who are nice people, but very structured and demanding, with many extended relatives with expectations thatch will attend every single birthday party, Sunday lunch, evening meal, etc, etc, etc.
After the baby was born, she began to control him by telling him he wasn’t a good father whenever he didn’t do what she wanted. And what she wants is to keep him with her, so he can pay for things, take care of the baby, and basically be her grunt.
They began spending all of their time together, probably 60% at her parents’ house, and 40% at
ours. I have worked hard to develop a good relationship with her, although some of the things she says and does really bother me. For instance… her car got hit and had a dent in the passenger door. She made her mother drive it, and she drover her mom’s. She refused to drive it because of the dent. When she is at our house, she rarely does anything to help. Instead, she leaves her dirty dishes on the table, baby formula sitting on the counter, wet diapers in the den. We never say anything. We’ve been very generous with our son, with the baby, and with her. Everyone contributes to the baby’s upbringing but her. When they are here, my son does much of the baby’s care. It’s my understanding that when she is at home, her mother is the primary caregiver.
My son is working out of town for much of each week this summer. Since this began, she takes the baby to day care every day. We hired her ton watch our other son, who is 9, every other week, so she drops the baby off at day care, lays on my couch or at the pool all day, then picks up the baby, drops him at her house, and goes out forth evening much of the time (based upon what she’s told me).
The problem is, she hasn’t been honest with my son, telling him she takes the baby to daycare 3 days per week rather than the actual 5, and that she is at my house rather late each night, because I get home late. In the position I hold now, I am at home by 4pm.
Most recently, they are preparing for college. She will be attending a local 4 year college. He will be attending a community college, to earn an associates and provide for his family, with plans for further education a later possibility. According to a text she sent me, the community college was “the only place he could get into”. She texted, demanding to known if we were going to help him pay for college. Despite the fact that it was none of her business, I assured her that we would figure it all out. Several days later during a phone call with my daughter, she said that we didn’t care whether or not he went to college, and that she thinks it’s sad that she cares more about him than his own parents. I cannot imagine what she has been saying to him.
I have tried a time or two to express my concerns, but his response is defensive, closed, and he simply doesn’t listen.
Its difficult enough to imagine myself committing his life to this selfish, self involved, lazy girl. It’s even more difficult to imagine not having a good relationship with my son. Since my son began working out of town, I have seen the baby two or three times, because she dumps him at day care or with her mom, and when my son is home she pretends to be so exhausted from being a single mothering his absence that she dumps the baby, and demands my son’s undivided attention (unless, of course it’s before noon, in which case she doesn’t care whobtakes care of the baby, as long as she can sleep.)
I absolutely don’t want to cause a feud, nor do I want to cause friction with my son. Right now he spends as much time here as she will allow, and with the exception of this huge blind spot, we have a good relationship. He simply sees what she shows him… that she’s an amazing mother, a wonderful girlfriend, and rIght about everything!
How do I deal with this? I don’t want to pretend to like her. It seems dishonest, and seems as though I should be at least attempting to pull him put of the center of the street before the mac truck of reality runs him over. Yet I know he won’t listen. Help!

Nagesh answers:

The problem is that you’re trying to control the outcome of his relationship. Whether you are right or wrong is irrelevant. Your son is now a man (in the eyes of the law at least) and he got his girlfriend pregnant. Not the smartest move in the world, but it was his move. He needs to deal with it. He’s content to stay with her. Whatever happens as a result of that it’s going to have to be something he deals with at the time. It’s his life and his lesson.

Let him know you love him and do what you can to stay out of his relationship. Once you give up the illusion of control, things will be easier. He knows how you feel. The rest is up to him.

David asks…

It’s not really a question.. just venting…?

Okay, so I’m just basically going to write what I’m thinking right now and I don’t know you can write back or something. The reason I put this on here is because I don’t really have anyone else to talk to about it.

My life is just going through major changes and I don’t know if I like them/ whether or not I can keep them. I’m Jamaican and so are my parents. I come from a place where homo sexuality is not acceptable. I have always been taught that it warrants death (Jamaica), but I do not feel that way. I recently moved to Montreal for a school. Mtl is a very liberal city and there are gay people everywhere. I became really close to this one gay guy who is my best friend here and this weekend we really talked about everything. I’ve always thought of him as not being gay because then its “okay” for me to be friends with him. He basically told me that he did not like that and that it wasn’t okay that I did that. Another thing I talked about was my use of the word fag, faggot, gay and homosexual and how I use them all on a daily basis. Basically I’m scared of being okay with homosexuality. I’m scared of change. My whole life I’ve been indoctrinated by the Jamaican culture and the Christian religion that it is wrong. I know now that it is not a choice and I truly believe this because who would want to go through that… My friends and family are not liberal in this subject at all and whenever I call home they ask me how the fags are and what not. One really good friend of mine actually talks about how they should all be burned, all the time. I’m scared of going back home and being changed because I know that I will be persecuted and made a mockery of by EVERYONE. My gay friend asked me if I even wanted to be friends and I cried because I love him so much and of course I want to be his friend and I’m trying but it’s so hard. It’s so hard to be different and I know that what gay people go through is a million times worse. My brothers friend (and mine as well) committed suicide at the age of 13 because he was bullied based on his sexuality. I want to change for him but when it’s the norm for 19 years of your life how do you just, change? I’m just scared to be the person I am here, at home.

What do you think… I know its weird and I just don’t know anymore. I can’t talk to any of my friends back home and I cant really talk to the gay friend because he thinks that I’m not trying hard enough. I love him for who he is and I almost don’t want him to be gay.. I want us to just be good friends without the sometimes awkwardness that comes when he says something like boy friend or I say something like faggot. I don’t know how to handle this anymore by myself. I feel like my whole like/self is changing and I have no say in it. Please understand that I don’t discriminate against gay people, I would just not go to a wedding and I just don’t want to hear about it. It’s almost like the don’t ask don’t tell policy except for I do this with everyone. I don’t want to know anyone’s sexual business, gay or straight.

I don’t know, is it normal that I feel this way? I ughhh.. sigh. Thanks.

Nagesh answers:

When I was little my parents always said that “gays” and “lesbians” were bad people. I always thought, “But they’re just people, people like us. Who cares if they’re different?” As I grew up I saw how much pain people went through. They killed themselves because people wouldn’t accept them. I cried when I heard about this. No one should be judged by anything other than “the content of their character.”
I’m not bashing at you for not supporting gay rights. You are entitled to your own opinion and no one should tell you you’re wrong. I am also sort of uncomfortable around these sort of topics.
This is one question I ask everyone:
When did it become a crime to love someone?

James asks…

Naming a Business?

I am going to open a shop that will sell mostly high quality Vietamese decorative planting pots and fountains. My shop is set up so that I can also have “areas” where I can present other products. There will be other types of “gardening and patio” items sold, such as home-made bird houses, hand-crafted woodworked cedar chests, tables, benches, and cabinets. I have connections in these industries that guarantees I will have the best prices or the only available product. The shop will be located in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Gulf Shores is also called Pleasure Island. My first name is Tracey and my partners name is Melissa. Based on this information what would be a good name for the shop?
Great Answers so far (except McDreamy) Thanks to everybody, keep them coming!!!

Can you translate my personal statement into spanish please?

Setting my mind to develop my career on this field was based on the fact that I have always admired the work of pharmacists, because of their philanthropic personalities. My choice of applying to this course was based on many reasons the most important of them is that I enjoy doing practical work and always show enthusiasm in it, as well ¬as enjoying science subjects and maths therefore showing a higher success in them compared to other subjects. Moreover I have always fascinated and inspired watching my father and my mother who are specialised in dentistry and medicine, taking care of patients and trying all their best to change their emotions.
My greatest stimulation was from the Arabic pharmacist Ibn Al-Baitar who moved this science a giant step forward by writing many books on this field, he is still used as a source of knowledge after more than seven hundred years of his death.
Throughout the last six year, I have maintained a huge range of skills and abilities that make me dependable to establish my future career as a pharmacist. Currently I am doing advanced higher maths and chemistry along with higher physics and computing, I think that I can tackle many difficult problems using the knowledge I gained during the last few years or even bring skills from higher computing, physics and level A Arabic that can directly assist me to make my way simpler.

I have participated in many school events, activities and duties, such as attending many biology and chemistry school trips which triggered my passion to specialise more in this field in future life, helping first years in their S.E. classes. Furthermore I have volunteered to do number partner which involves helping pupils from first years who are struggling in maths by doing games. In addition I have been a member in the drop in centre, peer support training, and took part in organising maths challenges and raising charity money for shoe box appeal and Christmas parsel. Doing Pair support reading three times a week during registration time is one of the duties I picked to when I attended the peer support meeting as a seiner pupil in Harris Academy; it is based on helping younger pupils improve their English reading skills and speed.
Before summer many members of sixth year including me helped organising three days for the first years to visit Harris Academy, explore the building, be prepared to the complete new way of education. As a result to all those activities, I have also benefited myself by increasing my cooperative work, communication skills and teaching methods.
On my studies aside, I occupy myself with many activities after school and during weekends like socialising with friends, playing badminton and video games, practice swimming once in a while, playing chest and keeping in touch with my friends and relatives back home.

I have taken in consideration that being a pharmacist is a big responsibility as it needs a lot of courage, determination and patience, a step from all the hobbies and interests I do on daily bases I would end by giving them up. On the contrary I would be grateful to have the honour to do pharmacy in the future.
In twenty years time I can visualise myself operating my own business with my cousin who is doing the same course at the moment.

Your Questions About Best Home Based Businesses

Ruth asks…

I need help with a complicated divorce situation…?

I was married for 7 years, have three kids, 2,8, and 9. My ex and I struggled for many years with intense fighting, her alcoholism, and other marital issues. It was hard for me to do, as we had kids, but I decided that divorce was best for everyone, seeing that all we did was fight. I own a house, a house that was our marital home. We were separated in November 2007, the divorce was finalized in January 2009. We could not come to an agreement in our divorce, as she demanded quite a bit. I gave in and agreed to pay $1400 monthly for child support, and the mortgage on the marital home ($900 a month) for one year, after one year, she was to begin “renting” the home from me for $600 monthly, with me paying the leftover $300. Well, a lot has happened in the past year. I own a business, which is losing a lot of money because of the bad economy, and my monthly debts (credit cards, loans, etc) are now 60 days late. I am facing bankruptcy, and CANNOT pay for the mortgage. To add to this, my ex has been flaky with rent, and states she does not have the money to pay the rent. I have not made the mortgage payment in almost 60 days. MY PROBLEM: My parents are affluent, they live a higher standard of life. They are appalled that I am going to let the home go into foreclosure, that my children will have to move to an apartment. They state that the kids do not deserve to live “like that”. They have been guilting me, like I am a horrible father for making my kids live in an apartment. (Might I add, my ex is fine with the apartment idea.) Are my parents right? Am I a bad father for not providing my kids with a large, newer home? Is it bad for your kids to live in an apartment? I feel really torn, as I really want the best for my kids, and don’t want to hurt them. But it is literally impossible for me to keep providing my ex and the kids with such a high standard of living that we lived when we were married. The standard of living that I had provided was largely based on credit cards, now, they are maxed out, and unpaid. I do know and admit that I was in over my head, so please, no harsh or judgmental replies.
My name is solely on the mortgage. My ex has not worked in probably 8 years. She is currently unemployed, and has no other income other than child support, ($1400 a month). I am upside down on the home, as I have refinanced quite a few times, and the value of my home has deteriorated due to the many foreclosures in my neighborhood. My ex does have sole custody, she has told me that she has stopped drinking, but unfortunately I would have no way of knowing if she is telling the truth.

Nagesh answers:

I’m sure you will get many different views on this. I can share this with you, (as a product of an ugly divorce myself and a teacher who has worked with children for over 25 years and all their domestic issues). Children are happy where they are secure and loved and safe along with having their basic needs met. Many children are raised in beautiful homes and grow up a mess because of poor parenting or poor choices. I know a family of 7 children who grew up in two very small bedrooms and are a very close wonderful family. Your children are young enough that they will adjust as long as they are not being forced into living in an unsafe place, or a place so small that it would not be healthy. Remember that the custodial parent must provide a bedroom for each child and that they can only share a room if they are the same sex. You didn’t mention the sexes but you might be renting a 3 bedroom apt. They are not that cheap. Whatever your best intentions are you can’t get blood from a stone. If you aren’t making the $ then you can’t keep the house. Period. The bigger issue right now is not losing the house to foreclosure. That would be a travesty. Sell the house so you can pay off your bills and split whatever equity you make. It sounds like you are in some serious need of financial counseling. If you got bankrupt, you are going to lose everything. You may not even have any credit rating to even get an apt. Please seek help before you dig yourself in any deeper.

David asks…

Is it possible, with a little effort & planning, to have both a great relationship w/ the spouse AND mistress?

The spouse could be a stay at home mom, affectionate at times, keeps a good house, fun to tease in a brother-sister way and is submissive, but also comforting in the bedroom one or two nights a week; while the Mistress, who is married herself, is professional, also has a sense of humor, a bit more fiery and aggressive, happens to be available a night or two a week when the wife is asleep anyway, or during business hours. There’s also a genuine affection there, but based in the reality that there’s no immediate future to the relationship.

Isn’t this the best of both worlds, really?

Laura asks…

I’m a rising senior and need help with college stuff?

Hello everyone. I am a rising senior and I am very interested in studying business (preferably some form of international business with a minor in Mandarin), but I’m not sure what the best colleges are for this area. I’m from north Georgia, so I’d like to stay close to home, but I wouldn’t be close-minded enough not to attend a school based on location.

I’ve done pretty well in my past 3 years of high school. I began attending a fairly prestigious private boarding school in Chattanooga, Tennessee, when I was in 9th grade. I had trouble with the change in work load at first, since I had gone to terrible quality public schools up to that point.

During my freshman year, my GPA was a 3.49. Sophomore year was a 3.67 and my junior year was a 3.88. I’ve been told that this pattern of my grades improving over my high school career looks very good to colleges and are more impressive than similar grades in public schools. I’ve also taken many challenging courses, with several being Honors or AP.

I’ve also taken the SAT once (although I plan to take it 1-2 more times and the ACT as well). I had a 600 in Critical Reading, a 630 in Math, and a 610 in Writing. I actually didn’t prepare for it at all, so I’m confident I’ll do better my next time(s).

Thanks for all the help!

Nagesh answers:

I would look hard at UGA. The Terry College if very good, but I am not sure if they offer Mandarin or not, I would think they do. I am fairly certain you will get into UGA.

Emory is good as well with a very good business program. Its a lot more expensive, but I am not sure if they offer Mandarin. If they do, its probably a better choice if you can get in.

Richard asks…

Whose fault is the economic crisis anyway?

So let’s look at how we got here:

ILLUSIONS

Big part of what makes the American Dream is hope. However unrealistic, uneducated, and misinformed choices replace hope with illusions.

Buyers had the illusion that homes would always keep increasing rapidly in value. However, they failed to understand that the real estate market has cycles. Some of the factors that create a change in the market are increased amounts of supply or demand, deregulation of the financial industry, easy and available credit, low interest rates and much more.

People who bought homes they could not afford did it because they saw an opportunity to “invest” their life savings and achieve the American dream. They viewed this opportunity as attainable because banks made it possible, unscrupulous agents/brokers made them believe it was possible, and because they lacked the knowledge necessary to understand the responsibilities, risks and benefits of owning a home.

Other illusions buyers had was their wages. The had the illusion that their wages would go up enough year after year to cover their ever increasing debt due to a lavish life style. This illusion, the lack of financial education and self-control allowed for people to live well beyond their means.

Today people, banks, and our government are drowning in debt.

CREDIT

Competition in the market forces business to improve on their products and allows the consumer to purchase those products at affordable prices. However, competition between banks in a booming economy and low interest rates created a credit bonanza.

Instead of banks improving on their products and services, they began utilizing creative financial tools to attract more borrowers. They also lend money to risky borrowers with little regard of their qualifications. Anybody that had a pulse could literally get a loan.

Banks can’t accommodate the demand for credit only with their money reserves. So if they want to lend more money, they sell these mortgages to commercial banks and Wall Street lenders.

Financial Crisis: Who’s Fault Is It, Anyway?

Doesn’t matter.

Because just about everyone is to blame.

Republicans opened the door through debt-based credit derivatives and deregulation. Democrats further contributed by turning a blind eye to Fannie and Freddie and insisting that even those who couldn’t really afford mortgages be allowed to get them. The Bush Administration touted consumer spending as a means to boost the economy, and encouraged reckless consumer behaviors with billions in “stimulus”money, all while fueling the national debt through a disastrous war and tax cuts for people who don’t really need them.

And, of course, greedy banks and mortgage lenders went along, doing their best to bilk whoever came through door for whatever they could get — before passing the risk on to equally greedy investment banks and hedge fund managers. Consumers came along for the ride, abandoning reasonable financial practices and using credit to fuel materialism — as well as making poor decisions by buying homes they couldn’t afford with “creative” mortgage financing.

Nearly everyone shares some of the blame. This is not the time to bicker over who is most at fault. It doesn’t matter. The past is past. It’s time to move forward and fix the problem. REALLY fix the problem. With practical solutions (that’s right, follow the link for just one alternative — and better IMO — solution) that don’t involve throwing a large, arbitrary amount of money at the problem.

This is something that requires measured thought. And a change in how our society now views debt, money and the economy. There’s no reason to rush into a bailout plan right now. Instead, a little more analysis is needed.

Nagesh answers:

I believe you forgot to give credit where credit is due to the Democrats you have sitting in congress, they have a great deal to do with the financial crisis as well.

Carol asks…

Everything is changing so fast….?

Okay, so I’m just basically going to write what I’m thinking right now and I don’t know you can write back or something. The reason I put this on here is because I don’t really have anyone else to talk to about it.

My life is just going through major changes and I don’t know if I like them/ whether or not I can keep them. I’m Jamaican and so are my parents. I come from a place where homo sexuality is not acceptable. I have always been taught that it warrants death (Jamaica), but I do not feel that way. I recently moved to Montreal for a school. Sounds like your between the proverbial Rock and a hard spot. Your Gay friend is pushing you to think like him and your family and friends back in Jamaica are demanding you not change. My advice would be to at least temporarily end contact with your Gay friend and then refuse to discuss Gays with those back in Jamaica. This way you can take things much more slowly with out being pressured and come to your own personal decisions.

Your Questions About Best Home Based Businesses

Thomas asks…

Going to adopt/rescue a dog i have some questions!!!?

My family just told me that they would like to adopt a dog and i am very excited!! So we have been looking at some close by shelters and we have found 3 dogs that we like.

*Cocker spaniel and shih tzu mix her name is holly http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=14761172

*Gizmo is the second he is a pomeranian poodle mix
http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=14552758

* and third is a pomeranian named Teddy

all of these dogs are house trained but we would like one that doesnt shed and doesnt yap a whole lot. We also have kids that come and visit (they are familiar with dogs and know the boundries) based on the mixes which dog would be the best… each site says they are friendly dogs but which mix would be the best with the kids.

A little info on our lifestyle. Both parents work from 8 till 5 but they come home alot during the day so they can let the dog out, and dad might also take him to the car lot to hang out there all day(he owns the business so it wont be a problem having the dog there) till i get done with school at 3. We dont have anyother dogs just outside cats so the dog would be alone in the house if dad didnt take it. Which breed/mix suits us??

Thanks

Nagesh answers:

I would vote Gizmo – for many reasons.

The site says he is good with children and other animals, so you won’t have to worry about him being skittish around the kids when they visit nor will you need to worry about him chasing the cats outside.

He is older, so already house-trained and able to stand long periods of time alone if need be. Also, he is less likely to find someone to give him the forever-home he so deserves, because he is older.

And he’s just adorable 🙂

Good luck with whoever you choose. Thank you for adopting!!

Mark asks…

Repost: Ask the tough questions now or wait for hard evidence?

My apologies to anyone who saw this posted earlier. This may be the most important question I ask here, and I’m just trying to reach as many segments of this community as I can.

When it comes to wives who fool around I’m in a tiny minority based on what I’ve found in this forum. I’m really not comfortable with the typical response of “kick her out” or “divorce the whore,” because I love her too much to think in those terms. And frankly the fear of losing her is worse than the idea of what she might be doing. It’s all about priorities and that’s where mine are right now…keeping the marriage intact, no matter what. For better or worse…and all that. That’s a vow too, no matter that she may have broken one as well. And this is all conjecture anyway….based on the classic signs of an unfaithful spouse. But the main one is my gut feeling. If I bring up her sexier clothes it’s because she thought I would like it. The same for the subtle, but noticeable, changes when we make love. She thought I would like her to change things up for excitement. If she is doing anything it’s far from routine. She just doesn’t have the time or opportunities to pull off a full blown affair. She does have two to four business trips a year and that would be her best chance. And it’s right after those that I notice most of the signs. I’ve been in relationships where the love dies at some point, and this is nothing like that. I would definitely know if the love between us was gone and it’s far from that. My question is should I talk to her about this now or wait until I have more concrete proof that something is going on? If I ask, she’ll tell me because she’s never shied away from the tough questions. But once I ask, and she answers, then we’re on a path I may not be ready to take. Not without a lot of preparation anyway. But I also know it has to be addressed eventually, and that’s why I’m seeking advice on the timing. Please don’t call her names or be unkind, because this is my wife…the love of my life and the girl of my dreams. She’ll be back home later this week and I’m trying to work up the nerve if I decide to talk it out.

Admittedly this seems a little paranoid. And a big element of this is my gut feeling, which could be wrong. I just don’t want to approach her about a possibile infidelity if it’s not happening. She’d be crushed.

Nagesh answers:

You do not have concrete evidence of her cheating, so it would be a sad situation if you acused her of it. I truly feel what you need is reasurance and do not know how to go about asking for it. Whenever me or my husband need reasurance from each other, we simply ask for it by saying, “honey, I need reasurance of your love and loyalty to me”….and it helps. If your doubts about your wife’s loyalty is getting the best of you there are ways to approach the subject without actually accusing her. You simply tell her about how insecure you have been feeling and then ask her to reasure you of these insecurities. Or is it that you avoid approaching the subject for fear of opening up a secret you do not want to know about? Your fears may be for nothing or they may be valid, either way you need to get answeres for the doubts you are feeling. You need to be able to open the doors of communication with your wife because leaving things unsaid can only make things worse. You are torturing yourself by dwelling on these doubts that you have. Get some reasurance from your wife. A loving wife would not hesitatle in reasuring her husband. By the way, your wife is a lucky woman to have a man who respects and loves her so much. If she is cheating, she would be foolish to do so. Good luck to you!

Jenny asks…

I am attempting to re-group after many years of harassment and domestic abuse. Now…?

I want to return to college and finish my last year. However, because of the extended time I was pursued and abused I have little work history and am ragged.

I have been unable to find work/jobs/or entry level careers in the current tight job market. Fortunately, I have a website, am a Amazon Associate, have an account on ebay, an account on etsy (for handmade goods) and have written a few articles for three major article writing venues. With the article writing business I do not have enough page views as of yet and have earned less than ten ($10.00) dollars thus far. I am not on the public dole but get assistance until I can get back on my feet from a relative who is soon to enter law school as well.

I have done my research (I love research and ultimately will go to law school) and have lots of projects that should bring in income for me. But I need to raise money to purchase supplies. As well, I want to earmark monies IMMEDIATELY for my college education. What I want to know is what is the best way to raise money quickly such that I can launch my business ventures? The amount of money I would need initially would be less than one-thousand ($1000.00) dollars.

I make my crafts from scratch and have master skills in needlework, so I project-based on my past performance-that I can command a decent price for my wares. I’ve thought of just about everything but have been unable to get over the final hurdle of financing (even minimally) my business ventures. I would appreciate any suggestions to help me out of this bind. I am not considering peer-to-peer lending nor borrowing money of any sort. I have not had credit in over a decade…besides…I cannot pay back any monies borrowed.

From research, I know the Internet is a powerful medium with a world-wide community of people who exemplify the absolute best in human kind. I would appreciate suggestions on proven methods of raising funds. No overnight schemes or work-at-home (after all these years I am chomping at the bit to re-join the business work force) schemes. I appreciate all serious responses.

William asks…

HELP! Fraud Alert..Can you Help me find Ryan Joseph Wrobel of Naperville, Plainfield or Hoffman Estates.?

For Xmas this year I purchased a ‘new never used’ verizon blackberry phone for $100 from a guy on Craigslist named Ryan Wrobel. He said he decided to get another phone instead; therfore it was never used and no number has ever been assigned to it. After a few emails, he finally agreed to meet my husband at his wifes place of business, a resale shop in Naperville, Xmas eve day in Naperville for the transaction. It went fine, no red flags until he got home. This, by the way, was my Xmas gift this year.

After he got home, we tried to activate this phone and we were told through Verizon that this phone is registered to another person, in fact the phone number was a New Jersey phone number, still active, and could not and would not be re-activated until that person called them personally. First I was stunned it was registered, Ryan Wrobel said it was never activated. Second, I was stunned it was still a working line!

Well, upon emailing Ryan Wrobel numerous times, he told me to just throw in a sim card; this phone does not have a sim card. Then he told us that he would contact Verizon and “fax them” some information, he said a release.

According to verizon, there is no need for a fax, a simple call to them, as the account holder is enough to release it. In fact it is very odd that someone would even do that they told me. In addition, they said it would be best to try to do a 3 way call to clear up the matter.

Well days turned into weeks and many emails back and forth occurred with no resolution. The 3 way call suggestion did not fly as Ryan Wrobel did not want to do that. Red Flag.Another red Flag was that he never offered up his cell number to us. The only way we could reach him was via email.Very odd, especially since he knew I was having these issues.looking back it all makes sense, but at the time I was still thinking it was just a mistake, not a scam.

Verizon tells us based on the ID numbers , the person I bought the phone from, Is not the person who holds the account and this continues to be a fraudulent transaction. Ryan Wrobel claims to be a very successful IT business owner; therefore it was shocking to me that such a person would not want to kindly refund me the $100 and move on. Most legit business owners would do that.I mean, It’s $100..what’s that to a business owner?

Instead, I have documented ugly emails from this person and so I decided to Google this ‘successful business owner’ and boy did I get a shock. He does not own an IT business. He works for a company as an IT manager in Hoffman Estates. Even more frightening, as a matter of public record I found that he was arrested for DOMESTIC BATTERY 720 ILCS 570/406(B)(3) 4 OBTAIN CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE BY FRAUD 720 ILCS 5/12-2(A)(1) A AGGRAVATED ASSAULT:DEADLY WEAPON/AIR RIFLE.

YIKES!

All I wanted was a blackberry phone for Xmas. I did not want any of this!

So as I am asking for help to locate this individual, I also want to warn anyone that he could be quite dangerous at the same time.

I want my $100 back. I also want our local residents to be aware of doing any kind of transactions with this man.

Please help me find this guy and get justice.

Call the police, call Verizon, call a lawyer, hire a PI.

George asks…

Is it a good time to buy or should I continue renting?

For the past few years I have been desperately yearning to own a home, even if that home is just a small condo. I recently learned of an 800 sq. ft. 1 bdrm + loft condo available in a complex next to mine. This condo is basically the same size of the apartment I live in now, and its 105K (short sale) which I consider to be a steal for the safety of the area we live in. I’m currently paying $995 to rent, plus my renter’s insurance which is $45. My lease is up in a few weeks and I’m really not interested in renting anymore. I feel like its a great investment, however I’m not sure what are the other costs involved in buying a home?

Also, I currently have about 45K saved up. If I were to put around 25K down on a condo in the 105K range, what would be the best type of loan for me?

I bring in around 5K a month in income, however I own my own business and do freelance writing. Some months I do really well, and based on that fact plus a few other factors I believe I could realistically have 105K saved up within 18 months to 2 years. Should I wait it out and rent another year or so, or should I purchase now?

Now is the time to buy. You sound like an ideal conventional borrower/ buyer. Your varied income is not a concern as long as the final amount you report on your taxes is enough. There are various other costs involved in the purchase process that your lender will go over with you when you meet by showing you a good faith estimate of each cost, the interest rate and monthly payment. You can use the good faith estimate to shop the rate with other lenders to get the best deal, just make sure each offer is based upon the same terms. After talking to the lender I recommend you find a realtor even though you have already found the property, The realtor will help you the rest of the way through the purchase process to make sure all your interests are protected and having an expert in your corner won’t cost you anything more when buying a property already listed by another agent.
