Tutors & Teachers…..What method do you find works best teaching a struggling child to read?
I am a Children’s Literacy Tutor with my own home–based business and was just curious to see some of the methods being used by teachers or tutors, looking for some creative and interesting techniques and ideas—Thanks

Motivation is a huge key.
If you can create reading exercises that produce immediate pleasant results and rewards it will move the reading lesson along at a good pace.
Ie: a scaverger hunt in which simple directions must be read and followed in order to locate the prize.
Or: a ‘read down’ similar to the old-fashioned spell down, using words which have been studied in recent lessons. WITH ONE IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE. Those who are “read down” first become coaches to the ones still standing (giving whispered answers in the ear of team mates). Just because a child misses one word should not put him out of the game….keep everyone involved.
Or: a ‘cake walk’ in which everyone stopping on a square (which contains a studied word) must be able to read that word in order to continue in the ‘walk’. ONCE AGAIN…..keep everyone involved by creating teams and/or allowing disqualified students to become coaches.

I have spa parties in my home and others. I generally sell about $250-$450 at each party with 8-10 guests. I make a 50% profit. That’s $125-$225 each party. They take about 2 1/2 hours, 1/2 to set-up and then clean up and about two hours talking and demonstrating. Very casual atmosphere, doesn’t feel like work at all. You can schedule as many as you want. Check out my site for more information:
